The Dhaka Wikimedia Community (Bengali: ঢাকা উইকিমিডিয়া সম্প্রদায়) unites Wikimedia volunteers, researchers, educators, students, cultural institutions, and heritage organizations with a shared mission to document and promote the rich and diverse history of Dhaka. As the capital and cultural heart of Bangladesh, Dhaka has been a center of political, educational, and artistic significance for centuries. This community is committed to preserving the stories, landmarks, and traditions of Dhaka and making them accessible to a global audience through Wikimedia platforms.

Objectives

  1. Document Dhaka’s Cultural and Historical Heritage: To collect, preserve, and share information about Dhaka’s rich history, traditions, architecture, art, and cultural practices through Wikimedia platforms.
  2. Promote Free Knowledge and Open Access: To encourage the creation and improvement of open-access content related to Dhaka in both Bangla and English across Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, and other Wikimedia projects.
  3. Engage Local Communities and Institutions: To collaborate with local educational institutions, libraries, museums, researchers, and cultural organizations in knowledge-sharing initiatives and outreach programs.
  4. Build Capacity Among Volunteers: To train and support new and existing volunteers in Wikimedia editing, digital literacy, and content development to strengthen local participation.
  5. Encourage Representation and Diversity: To ensure that underrepresented topics, communities, and voices from Dhaka are included and represented accurately on Wikimedia platforms.
  6. Support Educational Use of Wikimedia: To promote the use of Wikimedia resources in schools, colleges, and universities in Dhaka, fostering a culture of research and collaborative learning.
  7. Decentralize the Wikimedia Movement: To contribute to the broader goal of decentralizing the Wikimedia movement in Bangladesh by empowering local contributors and shifting focus beyond national-level narratives.
