Community Wishlist Survey 2023/Search and Categories/Some transcluded templates include the page in unnecessary categories
Some transcluded templates include the page in unnecessary categories
- Problem: Let's say that template Foo is transcluded in the page Lorem Ipsum. The template Foo automatically includes the page Lorem Ipsum into the category Examples, but the page Lorem Ipsum should not be placed in the Examples category.
- Proposed solution: There should be a way to prevent some pages from being placed in certain categories. In the above example, something like adding
{{#EXCLUDECAT:Examples}}
or<excludecat>[[Category:Examples]]</excludecat>
at the bottom of the page Lorem Ipsum would be some of the possible solutions. - Who would benefit: The users who work with categories and the readers who use them.

Discussion
- Isn't this what
<noinclude>...</noinclude>
is already for? Also possibly related: Community Wishlist Survey 2023/Search and Categories/Limit which namespaces are allowed in a category on the category page itself. Nardog (talk) 06:08, 6 February 2023 (UTC)- Yes, but not everyone knows
<noinclude>...</noinclude>
exists. I have added them to several templates to fix exactly this issue. Unfortunately, I do not think having to add some other form of code to the template would fix that problem, as the same users who are unaware of 'noinclude' tags are not likely to be aware of our new solution either. Joshbaumgartner (talk) 22:54, 10 February 2023 (UTC)<noinclude>...</noinclude>
would work only if you insert it in the templates's wikicode. This proposal is for edge cases, where the category automatically provided is generally useful, but for a few page is not. --NGC 54 (talk|contribs) 01:24, 11 February 2023 (UTC)

- Oppose This seems to be duplicating the functionality of noinclude and giving us another special format to look for (as editors) and maintain (as developers). CRGreathouse (talk) 20:06, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
- Oppose The proposal will add unnecessary maintenance hassle--SunAfterRain 11:57, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
