Community Wishlist Survey 2022/Larger suggestions/Option to rotate text orientation
This proposal is a larger suggestion that is out of scope for the Community Tech team. Participants are welcome to vote on it, but please note that regardless of popularity, there is no guarantee this proposal will be implemented. Supporting the idea helps communicate its urgency to the broader movement. |
Option to rotate text orientation
- Problem: Some languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc.) were historically written in multiple directions. Sometimes there are directional wordings in text that requires specific matching text direction in transcription to understand. Some might also prefer reading the text in original direction instead of modern direction.
- Proposed solution: Support the display of Chinese/Korean/Japanese text in non-default direction.
- There could be a default orientation setting for each document
- And then user can also change the setting as they like
- It will also benefit other non-wikisource wiki projects that are written in those languages, allowing users to read those wikis in the way they like
- Who would benefit: People reading historical documents in relevant languages Wikisource. And also just general readers of wikiprojects in those languages. Editor of some of the relevant language sites sometimes used special formatting to keep some text vertical, which would no longer be needed if such support is implemented.
- More comments: I have originally drafted the wish in 2018 but was not submitted at the time. Some browsers like Vivaldi have a reading mode that have built in support to change text orientation in the reading mode, however they don't work properly with advanced text formatting.

- I think phab:T11436 (Vertical writing support in MediaWiki) is closely related to this wish. whym (talk) 13:55, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

- The description can be edited. I agree it seems obsolete and in fact it would be a good idea to update it. whym (talk) 09:26, 27 January 2022 (UTC)

- ^. This is probably too large for tech team. --Izno (talk) 20:56, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
- A great idea, but indeed I think it's too big of a project for our team. As such I'm moving it to Larger suggestions, which is a means to tell the WMF and broader movement how much this means to you. See you tomorrow when voting starts! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 01:22, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
