General maintenance, outstanding phabricator tickets
Problem: Commons hasnt received regular maintenance over the last few years, many of the upload tools dont use Two Factor Authentication(TFA), video2commons and videoconvertor both constantly fail especially on large files like those recorded from Wikimania 2021. There have various suggestions as to why this is happening but it comes back to there is no one taking responsibility for the project. Until this is addressed all the projects cant look at implementing newer more user friendly content
Proposed solution: Fix outstand phabricator tickets, and have a dedicated team looking after Commons(Volunteer and Staff)
Who would benefit: readers, content creators, and projects future potential
Hiding the gap to make less visible to wikipedians that there is a gap, is only going to enlarge the gap. You won't be able to move the gap under the carpet permanently. I am afraid to say that actions like this (kind of a dumpster category, instead of keeping it within its adequate context) are the ones that really damage the credibility of the Wishlist. Thank you @Xavier Dengra. We (the Community Tech) are quite upfront about this piece but still many people are not aware of that. That worries us, so we're upfront all the more.
In the FAQ, we repeatedly explain that our team is only allowed and able to work on a specific type of tasks. Please read "Does this survey determine all technical changes in Wikimedia?" and "How do I create a good proposal?" (particularly "Less than a year-long project, more than a bug"). The Community Tech can't decide to hire a new team, so this is not a proposal for us, therefore this is not a valid proposal for the Community Wishlist Survey. Instead of archiving such proposals to make them less visible, we make a list of "Larger suggestions". Later, we will share it with our leadership.
In the last three years only 7 of the 25 upvoted proposals were made. Why should we be using our volunteer time to discuss, propose and help in a process that is rigged form the very beginning? Theklan (talk) 09:37, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Support: Commons is a mess and as well as being a valuable project in its own right, this has an impact on all us other Wikimedians (such as myself, a Wikipedian). — Bilorv (talk) 16:36, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Support Commons, Wikidata is not a "normal" project, it's an international project that many people are choosing this as their main wiki. Thingofme (talk) 14:11, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
