Editing Wikidata from Wikipedia

  • Problem: Many Wikipedia articles draw information from Wikidata for infoboxes, templates like the one for the external link to an official website, and uses of the Wikidata template in article prose. This is particularly useful for centralizing information that needs regular updating. However, inexperienced editors often don't know how to get to Wikidata to do an update, so they either give up or overwrite the Wikidata template with the new value. This causes frustration and harms the quality of our articles. A crude workaround, the pencil icon template, makes it a bit easier to get to Wikidata, but this disrupts the appearance of articles, including for readers with no interest in editing.
  • Proposed solution: Build an interface that allows editors to edit Wikidata values directly from Wikipedia, or that at least makes it easier to get from templates that draw from Wikidata to the Wikidata statement that hosts the information.
  • Who would benefit: Editors trying to update information drawn from Wikidata, and Wikipedia readers or Wikidata users who would benefit from updated information.
