At Wikimedia UK we are well aware that women's achievements are not given the same credit or recognition as those of men. Only 19.26% of biographies on the English Wikipedia are about women.
As one of the most widely used websites in the world we recognise the important role we must play to improve women’s representation historically and culturally. We are working to increase the number of biographies and entries about women on our platform. Volunteers and groups such as WikiProject Women in Red are devoted solely to addressing this imbalance.
This year we are working with CARE International UK, a charity dedicated to fighting poverty around the world with expertise in gender to start to #ChangeTheStory on women’s representation.
Our campaign will focus on the unequal representation of women in different areas of society, and we are calling on you to help!
Get involved
We are asking our volunteers to share facts, statistics and stories that demonstrate the imbalance of representation on Wikipedia, and what we are doing to help correct this.
We will be sharing these facts and stories on CARE International and our channels to raise awareness of the issue, engage the public and bring more volunteers to Wiki!
Our first theme is women in sport, and an example of the type of thing we are looking for is: there are more entries on Wikipedia about football and male footballers than there are about women in their entirety - only true.
Do you have other interesting or shocking facts about women’s representation on Wikipedia? It could be in relation to art, politics, food, or other popular topics with broad appeal.
We would love you to come join us and help shape this campaign. We think it is a fantastic opportunity for us to draw attention to the work we are doing to address gender inequality on Wikipedia – and together with CARE International, the world!
