Abstract

Multilingualism of the Russian Federation might only be beaten by that of India, Indonesia or Africa, but so far we have more Wikipedias in languages indigenous to our lands. UNESCO classifies languages and cultures as cultural heritage of humanity, whilst United Nations Economic and Social Council states that preserving effective access of humans to cultural life is a joint responsibility of UN Member states, UN agencies and the Civil society. We have some 7000 languages on the planet and only about 50 or so used as a working language in various UN Member states, whilst UNESCO itself mainly uses only English and French for its business. Cultural values might be priceless, but their long-term survival has quite a high price tag - and it's easier to bear it by pulling various resources together. And it has to happen in a Wiki-Smart way, as we can't expect every language community to build its own analogue of the Space Program.

Attendees will learn about a project and will gain insight into various challenges and solutions thereto that Russia's multi-ethnic and multilingual wiki-community came up with along the way to where we are today.
