The lightning talk dwells on the diffusion opportunities provided by media in Wikimedia Commons to cater for the needs of minority language communities during the COVID-19 crisis and the ensuing confinement decreed in both Spain and France:
- Information opportunities provided by the different Basque local digital press in order to feed a centralized, free avenue of multimedia information, Wikimedia Commons, thanks to the work done by the Basque Wikimedians User Group and the Basque Education Program to encourage the use of CC-BY-SA licensing among these media outlets. Their media files are thus available not only for the Wikimedia Community but also for educators, schoolchildren and students for their use in assignments, both presently and for the future.
- The talk will also dwell on the relevance of translating media available in Wikimedia (WikiProject_COVID-19_Graphics) in order to tackle confusion and spread guidelines in the fight against the COVID-19 in minority languages, where official specific publicity and communication may be scarce, inefficient, or lacking. During the COVID-19 crisis and confinement, the social media (Telegram, Whatsapp, Twitter, Facebook or other) have become pivotal in the attempt to get in contact with the rest of a community stranded in their homes and receive COVID-19 specific messages and media in their own language.
- What will attendees take away from this session?
