CIS-A2K/Events/Session with Marathi Wikisource editors on 'Wikisource Reader App'

CIS-A2K is facilitating the development of Wikisource Reader App in collaboration with Indic Wikimedians. The app will be primarily designed for Android devices, enabling access to validated and proofread texts from Wikisource via Wikidata. The orientation meetings are being conducted with different Wikisource communities to explain the requirements of formats and preparatory work to be done by the communities. The meeting with Marathi Wikisource community members was conducted on 30 December 2024. The meeting was facilitated by Bodhisattwa Mandal and Subodh Kulkarni. Total three Wikimedians including Marathi Wikisource admin attended the meeting.

The meeting covered essential topics, including the creation of metadata items for books, differentiating literary works from published editions, and the necessary structural elements in Wikidata. A practical demonstration illustrated the process of entering book details and addressing user permission challenges. Additional discussions highlighted the validation of a list of transcluded books and the app's future features, such as chapter downloads and language selection. Action items assigned to team members included sharing the metadata sheet, linking Wikisource content to Wikidata and developing the app interface.

The following action items were evolved through the discussions -

• Creating Wikidata items for books: Including basic information such as author, language, title, publication date & place, publisher, form of creative work etc.
• Differentiating between literary work (abstract) and published editions
• Linking editions and translations to the original literary work

The demonstrations of creating Wikidata items for different Marathi books were made by Bodhisattwa.
