[edit]

Date: 27 October 2023

Facilitator: Giovanna Fontenelle

Support: Satdeep Gill (WMF)

Participants: 24

Introduction

On 27 October 2023, an instructive training session on structured data was conducted by Giovanna Fontenelle, with support from Satdeep Gill (WMF). The session aimed to educate a group of 24 participants on the intricacies of structured data. The presenters were both part of the Culture and Heritage team, and the training was organized under the umbrella of the Image Description Month Campaign.

Image Description Month Campaign

The session commenced with an introduction by Giovanna Fontenelle, who set the stage by explaining the purpose of the "Image Description Month" campaign. In October 2023, this extended campaign was launched, focusing on image-related tasks. It marked a departure from our previous one-week campaigns and had a core objective of promoting the use of structured data on Wikimedia Commons.

Structured Data Overview

Following the introduction to the campaign, the session's trainer provided an in-depth overview of structured data. This project, designed to enhance both human and machine understanding, employs a multilingual approach to link Wikidata items and Commons images. This enables the retrieval of Wikidata entities in multiple languages and is underpinned by several key objectives:

  • Improving Accessibility: Ensuring that data is readily accessible.
  • Enhancing the Quality of Information: Elevating the standard of information available.
  • Improving Searchability: Making content easier to find.
Structured Data on Commons (SDC) Training

The training session delved into advanced tools and techniques related to Structured Data on Commons (SDC). These tools ranged in complexity, catering to users of varying skill levels:

  • Easy Tools: SDC tab, Media search
  • Medium Tools: AC/DC (Add to Commons/Descriptive Claims), ISA tool (Official pilot project for Structured Data), Image Annotator and SDC (Tool for image annotation on Wikimedia Commons), ViewIt! Tool
  • Hard Tools: Pattypan, Petscan, Minefield
  • Expert Tools: OpenRefine, Session Recording

The entire session was recorded to provide a valuable resource for attendees and those who were unable to participate but wish to learn about structured data. This training session provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of structured data and equipped them with the skills to contribute effectively to Wikimedia Commons.
