See new planning page for the Book Management project taken up under Google Summer of Code project 2014 here: Book Management 2014.
This is a planning page for the Google Summer of Code project to improve support for book structures in MediaWiki. The goal of this project is to create a new extension to use on wikis that host book content (Wikisource, Wikibooks, etc.) It will provide a user-friendly form to organize individual pages and subpages into a single book structure. Once the structure of the book is established, navigation bars can optionally be auto-generated for the various pages.
There are also a number of optional deliverables I hope to accomplish, if time permits: optionally generating tables of contents, creating print versions of books (through the "print version" button, as well as a potential patch to Extension:Collection), and allowing books to be collected on a "bookshelf" for later viewing. I also hope to add support for one-click actions on a book, such as watchlisting, deleting, moving, or protecting an entire book.
