Timeline

  • July 2024: The lawsuit is filed for 20 million Indian rupees.[1]
  • 20 August 2024: A hearing for the case is held.
  • 5 September 2024: The court warns the WMF about its noncompliance with the order and warns that Wikipedia could potentially be blocked in India.[2]
  • 16 October 2024: The WMF receives an order from the court.[3]
  • 21 October 2024: The English Wikipedia article is removed and replaced by an official notice by the WMFOffice role account.[4]
  • 6 November 2024: The English Wikipedia community breaks its onwiki silence with an issue of The Signpost focusing on the community's reaction against the lawsuit.[5]
  • 9 November 2024: The English Wikipedia community issues an open letter to the Wikimedia Foundation. It currently has over 1300 signatories, the most ever in Wikipedia history.[6]
  • 14 November 2024: The court issues a summons to individual editors who allegedly defamed Asian News International.[7]
  • 14 November 2024: A blackout of English Wikipedia is proposed in protest. However, an RfC on the proposal closes against it.[8]
  • 16 December 2024: Another hearing is expected to be held.[7]
