Abstract (up to 300 words to describe your proposal)

At the outset, Wikipedia as a multilingual encyclopedia seems to have a particular stronghold in the circumpolar region. Of the approximately 70 circumpolar languages (that is: languages indigenous to the circumpolar region), almost all have a literary language, and 46, or 65 % of the languages have a Wikipedia or Wikipedia Incubator edition. Compared to the global situation, both Wikipedia's position and the degree of literacy in the far North are remarkable: Of the 7117 living languages counted by Ethnologue, 3982 (55 %) have a literary language, and only 620, or under 9 %, have a Wikipedia or Wikipedia Incubator edition.

Upon a closer scrutiny of the circumpolar Wikipedia editions, it will become clear that these numbers are misleading. The goal of this article is to investigate in what way they are misleading, thereby hopefully getting a deeper understanding of both indigenous language literacy, the position of circumpolar languages in the countries they are spoken, and of how small Wikipedia editions are created.
