Executive member of the 50/50 Group, a non-partisan group that advocates for gender parity and women’s empowerment. Aisha Fofana Ibrahim is a feminist scholar and activist and one of Sierra Leone’s foremost scholar and practitioner in Gender and Development who strongly believes that power and privilege should be used in the service of others. She straddles the divide between policy and practice, both teaching about gender to graduate students as well as promoting women’s empowerment in practice. As a gender equality activist, her most current advocacy focus has been on ensuring that the new revised Sierra Leone constitution does not continue to marginalize women and meets the gendered needs of all citizens. She is also working with her organization, the 50/50 Group to ensure that Sierra Leone has increased representation of women in its forthcoming elections of 2018. Her current academic research focus is on gender and artisanal mining and the impact of Ebola on women and girls but she also works on violence against women, women’s political participation and women’s narratives and auto/biographical writings and has publications in all these areas.
