Africa Wiki Women IWD - Inspire Inclusion 2024

The African Wiki Women IWD Inspire Inclusion 2024 Campaign celebrates IWD 2024 by enhancing existing articles and items on African women through their contributions on the Wikimedia projects whilst also establishing a community for African female Wikimedians by providing a platform for peer learning and connections within and outside the Wikimedia space in line with this theme, "Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress."

This Campaign primary objective is to enrich content concerning women's issues, focusing on key challenges impeding gender equality by 2030; inadequate financing, poverty, gender-responsive financing, feminist activism, and the green economy in Africa.

Furthermore, this campaign will prioritize enhancing Wikipedia articles and Wikidata entries related the Women’s March in Africa 2023 and the International Women’s Day activities will receive expanded coverage, addressing the current limited representation across African countries.

Objective

  • Recognition and Celebration: The project aims to recognize and celebrate the contributions of African female Wikimedians in terms of contribution, contents, and readership, elevating their visibility within the Wikimedia community and beyond.
  • Improvement of Content: By enhancing content related to women and key gender equality issues, the project strives to provide a more comprehensive and accurate representation of African women's experiences and challenges, fostering greater awareness and understanding.
  • Addressing Content Gaps: The initiative targets missing or inadequately covered topics on Wikipedia and Wikidata related to African women's achievements and struggles, rectifying gaps in knowledge and representation.
  • Building Community: Through sensitization efforts and community-building activities, the project seeks to cultivate a sustainable and supportive network of African Wiki Women, empowering them to contribute effectively and collaboratively to Wikimedia projects.
  • Diversifying Content: By generating diverse and inclusive content, the project aims to amplify marginalized voices and perspectives, promoting a more equitable representation of women's issues and experiences in Africa.

Target Participants

This campaign is open to anyone (Male & Female) willing to support this focus, however we will specially expect more contributions from female African Wikimedians from both francophone and anglophone countries in Africa. Notably, the project seeks to involve individuals from countries such as Ghana, Tanzania, Nigeria, Kenya, and other nations within the continent.
