Description

[edit]

Activities Record

[edit]

Consider including the following information:

  • What did you do?

We organised three training sessions with students from three different universities, document research activities and a press conference.

  • Training Sessions
    • April 8: First workshop with the students of the department of Engineering and Industrial Quality, Hygiene, Security and Environment and members of the Google Developpers Club from the Higher Polytechnic School Douala .
    • April 12: The second workshop took place in the University of Dschang with a group of students from the Geography Departement.
    • April 13: The third event was organised at the UCAC-ICAM Campus with training sessions with two groups: The first group was the students of the Evnironement Club and the second group was Senior students form the Process Engineering programme.
  • Other activities

Alongside the training sessions, the organising team held document research and data collection sessions at the French Institute of Cameroon of Yaoundé, the Center for environnemental data and environnement documentation, and the IRD (French national Research Institute). Finally on April 29, a press briefing was organised in a restaurant in Douala to discuss about the Africa environment Wikifocus project to raise more awareness beyond the students trained.

  • Who organised it all? Who was on your team (who did what?)?

The organising team was made up of Serieminou, E82MAA, Tchoumegni and Ntdloasis.

    • Serieminou was in charge of coordinating the project and mananging all the adminstrative work related to the project (identying the potential partners, preparing applications letters and requests, finance etc.) She was the main trainer at the 3 workshops in Douala, Dschang and Yansoki
    • E82MAA was a trainer for the two training sessions that were held in Douala and Yansoki on April 8 and on April 13.
    • Tchoumegni was in charge of on organising the training session in the University Dschang (application to the school authorities, follow up, planning etc.) and follow up the partnership request with the IRD. He was a co-facilitator at the training session in Dschang
    • Ntdloasis was responsible of planning and organising a training session with the students of the Environment students of National Advanced School of Public Works in Yaoundé. He was also in charge of sending out and following up the applications with the ONACC and the Ministry of Environment to grant us access to the data and documentation.
  • The organising team was assisted by other wikimedians for communication, logistics and facilitation. Kano Tchapi assisted with the planning, communication and coordination with the students and School officials and Olivier Moukodi was in charge of the logistics. Inoussa Ngouloure, a Geography Phd Student from the university of Dschang assited in the coordination and communication for the training session in Dschang. Finally Mathias Mouende, environmental blogger and fact checker, was a trainer at the third working session in Yansoki where he did two presentations on the impact of climate change.
  • Did any organisations or associations or groups partner with you to make it happen? If so, who are they?
    • The IRD, the Center for environnemental data and environnement documentation, the French Institute of Cameroon in Douala who granted us access to their documentation and library.
    • The University of Dschang, Ucac-Icam Institue and the departement of Engineering and Industrial Quality, Hygiene, Security and Environment of the Higher Polytechnic School Douala who hosted us and assited us in organising the training sessions with their students.

    • April 8 2023: Session with the students of the Higher Polytechnic School Douala at MB Code, co working space in Kotto neigborhood. Students were informed by the head of departement, and we had a flyer shared in the departement Whatsapp group .
    • April 12, 2023: Session at the University of Dschang with students from the Geography Departement. The information was sent out by the dean of the faculty of Science and head of department of Geography and a list of students wishing to participate in the training was opened. A flyer was created and shared in students messaging groups.
    • April 13, 2023: Session at UCAC-ICAM Campus, at Yansoki, Yassa. The communication as well as the planning and preparation were coordinated by the school. No flyer was designed.

Goals and Outcomes

[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

The goals were met generally. We were to carried out the three events we planned although target was adjusted. We had to cancel the training planned in Yaoundé due to lack of ccoperation from the National school of Public works and replaced it with a training ith students from Ucac-Icam. We had less articles than planned published. Many of the assigned were not written by the end of the project.

Please use the table below to report on the outcomes achieved, starting with the original targets you shared in your proposal for the microgrant.

Final project metrics
Proposed metrics Anticipated outcome Achieved outcome Explanations
Number of events 3 4 We were to hold 3 trainig sessions as planned and organised a press conference at the end of the project
Number of participants 100 103 We had less students than expected during the first two sessions and more students in the two sessions at Ucac-Icam
Number of new editors 20 41 over 40 participants were able to create account to create accounts during the traning session and made at least one edit.
Wikipedia articles created 20 16 Some articles were assigned to some organisers and experienced editors and some of them failed to submit the article
Wikipedia articles improved 50 +60 Students were encoruaged to edit existing articles during the sessions. We focused on adding a climate subsection in the article of the main cities of Cameroon as wella sthe regiions.
Wikidata elements created 100 +40 We were only able to introduce Wikidata to participants at the first sessions. And due to time constraints, we decided to focus on Wikimedia and Climate change awareness during the next sessions.

Learnings

[edit]

What did you learn? What are you proud of? What was challenging? From this experience, what would you do differently if you had to do it again?

I learn that it can be very challenging with government organisations. They are very slow and it can be very hard to follow up with them or get positive results from them, especially if you don't have somebody inside the organisation to support your project. I am really proud of the organising team who put in all the efforts to make sure we were able to get in touch with relevant parteners and ensured that we could introduce Wikipedia to a hundred of students who had never contributed to Wikipedia. I am very happy that our Georgraphy students from the university Dschang were so motivated and excited about Wikipedia that they decided to create a group and have had two follow up sessions after ou workshop.

The main challenge was the turnout. Most students who registered for the event didn't actually come. We had 30 registrations for our first workshop and only had 11 participants. For our second workshop in Dschang, we had over 40 registrations and only 12 showed up. It appeared that a lecturer had called for a test on the date and we were only informed a few hours after we started with the other participants. Some requested that we organised another session for the second group the next day, but a session was already scheduled in Douala on that day. I also learned that it can be really difficult to give enough knowledge and skills in a 3 hour session for a student to do quality edits thereafter.

If I had to do it again, I would have organised one opened session targetting experienced wikimedians, so that we could have more articles written. I would also eventually reduce the number of schools to just two and try to have two sessions with all the groups so that they could learn more to be able to go further in editing adter our training.

Finances

[edit]

How did the initial proposed budget compare to the final costs of the project? Were there any unexpected costs or changes to your initial budget.

Globally, because we hosted by some universities, we spent less money than initially planned. No unexpected costs. However, since we had money saved from social media communication, we decided to spend it on media coverage to document the project and used the money to hold a press conference with a few journalists.

Use the table below to display your initial request, include the approved line items on your proposal and the proposed cost of these. Insert the real cost of each expected line. Add extra lines for additional expenses that were not anticipated in the proposed budget. If your budget is in local currency, please use the exchange rate on the date (or an average of the dates) that your money was transferred to your account. Historic mid-rates can be found here.

Please reuse your initial request, provide initial budget for each line, indicate actual expense for each line, and finally justify significant differences.

Final Cost of Project
Proposed line item Initially budgeted($) Actual Spent Explanations (of differences)
Repas et rafraichissement ateliers et conférences 420 385 We had less people than planned at first two sessions so less was spent on transportation. For the third session because had two session with over 75 students, we provided our participants with only mini cookie sandwich snacks and bottles of water.
Transport Douala – Yaoundé, aller-retour 60 35 The second trip to Yaounde planned for the training session with Environment students

of the national school of public work was cancelled since we failed to have an agreement from the school director

Transport Yaoundé - Dschang 100 100 -
Hôtel 150 125 Training in Yaoundé was canceld, the trainer had to cancel the trip and thus the hotel
Internet et communication équipe 100 140 In addition to the 4 members of the organising, we offer internet stipend of $17 to

the 4 wikimedians who assisted us in the organising the training sessions.

Location salle 200 83 We only rented the hall for the first training session held at MB Code.

Since the two other wokshops took place within the campuses of the University of Dschang and the Ucac-Icam institute, we didn't have to rent a hall for those two other workhops.

Internet ateliers 90 90 -
Conception graphique flyers visuels 50 30 We made only two flyers instead of the 3 intially planned. We didn't have to make one

for the third session because the institute did all the preparation and the comunication towards their students.

Communication Réseaux sociaux 50 0 No paid communication was made on social media as we finally decided to do

closed events with specific groups of students.

T-shirts for organising & support team - 55 9 T-shirts with the Africa Environment Wikifocus logo were printed

for the organising team and the support team.

Press conference - 120 We decided to use the money initially budgeted for social media communication

for media outreach through newspapers and blogs. We met with the local press on April 29th 2023 and presented the project its objectives and the activities carried out within the project.
