Priority translations

[edit]

If anyone feels like translating in a different language that's missing from the language bar, please contact User:Elitre (WMF) to have it added.

Thanks to all the translators for their understanding and support so far.

Languages considerations

[edit]

Mostly based on where the affiliates are located, there are some languages that appear to be more relevant for several of them, namely Arabic, French, Russian and Spanish.

This said, there are several others, listed below in no particular order, that should also be considered: Chinese, Ukrainian, Bengali, Czech, Hungarian, Romanian, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Polish, Farsi, German, Cantonese, Finnish, Hindi, Thai, Dutch, Greek.

The "plan" is to have as much content as possible covered in the 4 key languages listed above, through community calls both on Meta and on translators-l, and some staff efforts if and when necessary. In case the need arises, the Wikimedia Foundation can provide translations for the 4 languages listed above through a contracted agency - as one can imagine, this is a last resort kind of move, and precautions need to be taken to make it work.

For this reason we are, for instance, asking nominees to please consider submitting as soon as possible to allow enough time for translations, to try to use simple language and short sentences to make the translators' work easier, and to please keep the résumé + statement at max 500 words combined.

Known issues

[edit]
  • https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T221119 - please ping User:Elitre (WMF) or comment on Phabricator if you get this error: "Saving the translation failed: This namespace is reserved for content page translations. The page you are trying to edit does not seem to correspond any page marked for translation."
    • Current workaround: Make a dummy edit (i.e., add or remove an empty line) on the source page. Mark for translation. Now resuming translations should work.
  • The tables above only cover priority languages when those have been specified, even though other languages are indeed available. The Language team is already investigating this.
