1Lib1Ref 2022 South Africa
The 1Lib1Ref campaign for 2022 in South Africa comprised of two components with the first leg being hosted in January 2022 and the second in May/June 2022.
Background
[edit]On 16 May 2022 Wikimedia ZA in conjunction with the Association for the Library Section in South Africa (LIASA) hosted the second leg of #1Lib1Ref, an international campaign. The event was held online via Zoom platform where LIASA and librarians in the country attended. The event was lead by Wikimedia South Africa volunteer and librarian at the University of Cape Town, Ingrid Thomson.
1Lib1Ref meaning 1 Librarian 1 Reference aims get librarians involved in adding references and citations to articles published on Wikipedia which lack the aforementioned.
The 2 leg of #1Lib1Ref was held from the 16th of May 2022 – 5 June 2022, this comes after the 1st leg of the campaign that was held in January 2022. Wikimedia ZA President Bobby Shabangu and LIASA Ingrid Thompson are the coordinators of the campaign in South Africa.
Impact
[edit]Twenty four (24) editors participated on the campaign. One hundred and seventy five (175) articles were edited, while two hundred and eighty (280) references were added on the Wikipedia encyclopedia. Over fourteen thousand (14 000) words were created through this campaign in South Africa. The campaign runs twice every year and the main objective is to have more librarians add more references to articles on Wikipedia.
