Wikimania 2021/Scholarships/Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda/Report

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Goals

[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

  • One of the major goals was to have an increased representation of Community members from Uganda attending Wikimania. This goal was achieved with the increased remote participants who attended the various sessions at Wikimania.
  • The Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda was hosting the first-ever virtual Wiki Indaba, and we wanted to learn from Wikimania as we prepared for Wiki Indaba. This goal was achieved as we were able to learn from the different features of the conference, Remo the platform, the facilitation, trust and safety and sheduling which allowed as to organize a successful WikiIndaba conference 2021

Outcome

[edit]

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Have atleast 6 community members attend the annual Wikimania event There were 15 community members who attended the virtual Wikimania In the past, we have had a limited number of slots and scholarships for previous Wikimania events (1-2 community members) which was not inclusive, however, thanks to the Wikimania Scholarships and online event, there was an increase of representation for members in Uganda.
Community members are able to understand the Wikimedia movement, and interact with Wikimedians across the continent. Community members learnt, interacted, and made connections with Wikimedians. This was through the individual members' reports with outcomes and experiences from every participant.
Community members understand, differentiate, and can contribute to various Wikimedia projects. A new article was created during the WikiIndaba period. User testimonies provided where community members were challenged to contribute to these projects.
The User group in Uganda can carry out User engagement of it's volunteers. Community members were inspired to join future usergroup activities. There were limited avenues for Community members to interact with each other, since most of them participate in different Usergroup projects. Wikimania brought all the members from these different projects together.

Learning

[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
    • The community members were able to attend the virtual Wikimania despite this being thier first time experience with virtual conferences. The various reports written by the community members were proof that the event was a success
  • What did not work so well?
    • The final reporting to the Usergroup in Tanzania took more than usual since the reporting template was general, and was shared after community members had completed individual reports. This delayed making a fully complete summarised report.
  • What would you do differently next time?
    • Share the sample reporting templates with community members before a final report is made.
