WMLGBT+’s Movement Charter ratification comments

[edit]

Wikimedians will hopefully be aware that there has been a ratification vote for the Movement Charter over the last 2 weeks.

For the sake of transparency, yesterday Wikimedia LGBT+ voted yes to ratification, with the following comment, to which links have been added for readers’ convenience:

WMLGBT+ has concerns that the current draft of the Movement Charter needs urgent amendment before it should go into force and we are concerned both that the Charter will be difficult to amend but that core features are held in supplementary documents that could be amended with little oversight.

The Global Council is poorly defined, with scope and membership having changed wildly throughout drafting, and ED&I protections need bolstering—especially in a Movement where the most frequently engaged contributors in policy and strategy are a poor representation of the global population, with little history of protecting minorities. Given the complete lack of functioning on-wiki processes for handling abuse of minorities, the incomplete and unrepresentative U4C electees do not provide hope.

Affiliates vary greatly in size and capacity for Movement strategy discussions.

That said, this Charter is slightly better than no Charter so we reluctantly endorse, in the hope of further improvement.

Sunday July 28 Strategic Wikimedia Affiliates Network meeting (Results of Movement Charter ratification)

[edit]
SWANs gathering for a conversation

Hello everyone!

The Strategic Wikimedia Affiliates Network (SWAN) is a developing forum for all Wikimedia movement affiliates to share ideas about current developments in the Wikimedia Movement. It expands on the model of the All-Affiliates Brand Meeting to help lay some of the groundwork for further Wikimedia 2030 strategy process work.

At this meeting we will focus on the results of the Movement Charter ratification. We will also discuss the aftermath of the Board of Trustees' decision to veto the Movement Charter, including their recent proposals. We will also cover updates about upcoming Wikimania 2024.

This month, we are meeting on Sunday, July 28, and you are all invited to RSVP here.

UTC meeting times are and

Open letter of support for Camelia Boban

[edit]

Dear all, one of the wikimedians that was always supportive of this group, Camelia Boban has been unfairly blocked indefinitely on the Italian Wikipedia for wanting with tenacity to set up a notice board for articles named for deletion for Wikidonne. I have written a letter of support during Wikimania : Open letter of support for Camelia Boban. Warm regards, Nattes à chat (talk) 12:14, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
