Facebook

If we must have a page of Facebook (and frankly I think that is contrary to being the most respected source of knowledge) can we please have one that does not require a login to Facebook. It's ridiculous that someone can edit Wikipedia anonymously, without logging in, but can't even see the Facebook page without providing the personal information that Facebook requires as a prerequisite to being able to login. Yes, I quite agree (although, I don't have a Facebook account and only think we should have one because the rest of the world seems to think that a thing doesn't exist unless it's on Facebook) and it is going to be... once the admins there figure out how to made it public. It's marked as a 'public group' but I think that's the wrong thing? Who knows... :-) Anyway, it'll be sorted out. By the way, what do you think of the name 'WikiClubWest'? what do you think of the name 'WikiClubWest'? I'm trying not to think about it all, lest it put me off ... I don't think using camel case and stringing a bunch of word together to make a new one is a good idea for anything - it looks to much like commercialism and an attempt to be catchy (and not the "respected ..."). The Facebook page has been fixed up, and is now https://www.facebook.com/wikimedia.au.west — the other one is a 'group', not a 'page', and so isn't visible to non-Facebookers (I'm guessing here, a bit). So at least that's something. This page is basically just meant to be a pointer to on-wiki info, so that people searching in Facebook will find us, so I don't think we need to worry too much about encouraging the use of FB ­— we won't add any events or anything there. Digitisation discussion

@Bahnfrend, Bjenks, Dan arndt, Evad37, Gnangarra, JarrahTree, Mitch Ames, and Samwilson: Terrific morning today, thanks all! I've set up the next meeting's page, and am attempting to get some sort of instructional stuff together at wikibooks:Wiki-based archival description and storage/Print version.

Some things we seem sort of agreeing on:

• Each collection gets its own mainspace (or userspace only?) gallery page and a single category to contain all its files
• The gallery page will contain background information and lists of original ordering and indexes to final storage
• Files will have high-res TIF or PNG as original, with various derivatives created and all linked via the 'other versions' key (no category per item or anything)
• Nothing gets added to Wikidata (per item)
• Australian material on Flickr can be indexed by Trove by adding it to the Australia in Pictures group... how can we take best advantage of this?
• Next meeting we should have two scanners and so bring computers and we'll all see how to make this all work!

Questions to be figured out include:

• Do we suggest everything be added to Flickr first, and from there copied to Commons? This helps with Trove linkages, but means either that description must happen on Flickr (by only one user) before import, or only on Commons after import and then the Flickr version doesn't get anything. Seems suboptimal!
• System of unique identifiers. Commons URLs aren't stable, but they usually get redirected if they change; would that do?

I'm sure there's more to it than this. I'll bring a price list and order form for polypropylene sleeves and folders, and can put in a group order if we want (saves on postage).

Thanks Mitch and Sam - the most focused and interesting Wiki Club West meeting in a long time, with good attendance and very positive signs for the future. The interest in how to organise the digitising of photographs and loading them is something we need careful checking as we use different objects (slides, negatives and prints) in the process. Also thanks for Dan for his constant reminding of focus and scope of what we are planning to do, keeping us from descending the various holes that we gaped into the mouth of. (Mitch, a dangling item!)

Whatever we do - the importance of description - when, where and what - of each image - is imperative as the processes cannot afford to have un-named items - as it completely ambushes prospects of category naming if there is inadequate clues where they belong. :JarrahTree (talk) 08:49, 21 April 2018 (UTC)

What's On guide

@Bahnfrend, Bjenks, Dan arndt, Evad37, Gnangarra, JarrahTree, Mitch Ames, Samwilson, Pru.mitchell, and Tenniscourtisland: The library has said we can be added to their What's On guide (we get about 75 words and a title). What should we say? Something like:

Wiki-salons: Join Wikimedians at their regular monthly meetups focusing on contributing material to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. Bring a laptop and learn how to upload and categorise photos, collaborate on transcribing historical documents, or get hands-on practice scanning archival material. From 10AM to 3PM, second weekend of the month: Sun July 15, Sat August 11, and Sun September 16. We'll break for lunch at the library café from 12–1. More information: www.wikiclubwest.org.au

Alternate proposal - Saturdays and Sundays over the time -

Suggest that if we have enough interest we might up the frequency of persons in attendance - we could go fortnightly for a trial period - with maybe sunday one week or saturday the next time.

Fortnightly sounds good, and alternating. We could even think about an evening thing maybe, during the week? The library is open Mon-Thurs till 8PM. We've got the ok for a monthly thing, but I reckon they might be flexible… doesn't hurt to ask, anyway. Sam Wilson 11:41, 3 May 2018 (UTC)
