Translations and non-English sessions are a must

It is good to see that you re-instated translations and opportunity for the sessions that would de-center English. I have to say that I was disappointed that was removed in a single meeting and that I needed to protest and engage others in the discussion to have this revert. I hope that the work will have no further setbacks like that. Hopefully this will no longer be questioned and advocated by native English speakers who are already both majority and centered in WM LGBT+ User Group. Registration only for one more week? (month in advance)

I think registration should be extended. It is not OK for to close registration week after the page has been built? It is online meeting, not a real conference where you need caterings and bookings to fix. --Zblace (talk) 07:11, 17 April 2021 (UTC)

Registration was extended by a week. This is the last week, but in practice, late registrations will be handled in a friendly way, though there may be delays due to the basic vetting needed to keep the event safe. --Fæ (talk) 14:57, 28 April 2021 (UTC)

Videoconference software

We are going to be able to use the "business" version of zoom within a day or two for testing. We can test out phoning-in options as well as other technical aspects during that a couple of sessions (I believe all the normal global phone-in options should work). If you have ideas for what things to test out feel free to add notes here, or join the telegram group to talk it through.

Note that for anyone technologically disadvantaged, so long as they let us know, we have an "access" budget to help out with fees for better mobile data access or similar. We'd really like to see it used! --Fæ (talk) 15:03, 28 April 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for highlighting this here, but just to be clear for many people access to video streams of zoom is not only an option of amount of data, but also: speed and continuity (no interuption) of connection, as well as hardware and software requierement. It would be good for the future to have this better planned out for accessibility. Offering text and presentations in advance would be a must to have people prepare and even translate if needed. High privacy and security prevents credit

Some people who attend LGBT+ events require privacy for their personal safety. Consequently, the organizers plan to avoid documentation of attendees, group photos, and attributing statements to individuals.

While I agree we need the security, and there was no other way to organize this event given the resource limits, for future events I would like more pathways for voluntary documentation. It is unfortunate that not everyone is free to fully express themselves publicly, but at the same time, Wikimedia LGBT+ is seeking to create a visible public presence where people can meet and discuss difficult issues. When we do not name attendees, we also apply barriers to crediting people for the projects they have done, Wikimedia community organizations from their contributions, regional groups for supporting their LGBT+ membership to join our event, and external partnering organizations for their sponsorship.

I have been to high-security Wiki LGBT+ events in the past where the security level was high. If on a scale of 1-10, 1 is "report anything anyone wants" and 10 is "hide the existence of the meeting", then many past Wiki LGBT+ events were a 9 or 10, and this current conference was a 7. Ideally, I would like for future conferences to have a budget to provide special security on request to individuals who request it, and for everyone else, to have lower security expectations so that we can better showcase our membership and programs.

I know how complicated this is. The only easy solution that I know to address this is more funding for more staffing, and of course, LGBT+ is such a niche issue in the wiki world that the WMF is unlikely to ever have security money for this. Thank you Blue Rasberry - I had similar concerns as I saw more than few times credits from critical and creative conceptual contributions missing (which is often hard social, intelectual and emotional labor), while mandane tasks are both consistently credited and often hiper-extende the (over-)presentation and impact of the same. I also share your perspective of how this should be adressed (not escaping some complexity and sophistication for just crude pragmatism), so will take it seriously when suggesting how to address it and would love to follow-up on this as a separate discussion that could go beyond just this event. @Zblace: I am free eventually or bits here and there. I think Wikimedia LGBT+ needs a task list that we maintain and prioritize. "Security" and "credit" could be items on such a list. Making the list itself is a task to organize. thanks Blue Rasberry (talk) 13:44, 21 July 2021 (UTC)
