One Meta Login?

Would it be possible to have it so that one meta login will work for all official MediaWiki sites?

Can a company buy a license to use the Wikipedia engine on an intranet site?

I work for a company that is looking for a new software for experience transfer. An intranet version of Wikipedia is one option we would like to consider. The information put into this database would be protected though, so using the regular Wikipedia.org is not an option. Is it possible to buy licenses to use the Wikipedia engine? Who can I contact with this matter?

The software used by the Wikimedia Foundation is freely available at mediawiki.org, and the information itself is available from the backups at download.wikimedia.org. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 14:39, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Would it be possible to put this on an intranet site and have access limited? Is it possible to purchase the code so on-house programmers attend security issues and customize it to our needs? (anon, 143.97.2.35)

Put it on an intranet site? Yes. Set it up on a server on your private network which has no connection to the public Internet. No problems there.
Purchase the code? No, you cannot purchase the code, because it is not for sale. You may, however, take it and modify it however you like. MediaWiki is open source software, so you don't have to pay for the code or ask to modify it. - jredmond 15:23, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

auto-capitalisation

can this be turned off? even the login screen auto-capitalises the login name you enter before checking against the database, so adding a user "bob" to the database and then trying to log in as "bob" will return a "there is no user Bob" error.

I have never seen this "autocapitalization". Presently all the characters I type are un-capitalized, unless I press the "shift" key. --Theo F 14:20, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

i think not. create a new page and look at the URL for it. wikimedia capitalises the words in the title. adam7davies has already mentioned this in relation to "welsh wiktionary" [above] in that entries that begin with a small letter are capitalised when wikimedia creates the page for that entry.

i have noticed this also in regards to user creation; if i create a user "bob" mediawiki actually writes the username to the database as "Bob". it also autocapitalises the name a user enters in the login screen before passing it to the database for processing, so that if i edit the database fields directly to change the stored user name to "bob" and then try and log in through mediawiki as "bob", the login is denied with a "there is no such user Bob" error.

maybe an esoteric point - but it seems weird that you can set up an account with a username which mediawiki then alters before creating the account - and then also alters the username you enter when trying to log in so that it conforms to the previously altered username stored when the account was set up in the first place. why not just leave things as the user entered them

need custom namespace in wikiversity

Hi, i dont know where to put this, so i ask here.

The german wikiversity at http://de.wikiversity.org needs 3 custom namespaces + discussion pages

  • "Kurs" and "Kurs Diskussion" Subpages: yes defaultseach: yes
  • "Übungen" and "Übungen Diskussion" Subpages: yes defaultseach: no
  • "Prüfung" and "Prüfung Diskussion" Subpages: yes defaultseach: no

someone can tell me where to put this request?

thanks, greetings Tomen 22:16, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

Main Page/Archives/2006 - 1 and -2 page name.

I don't know where to put this question, so I'll just do it here.
I have a template, which I put on "Years", I use the {{PAGENAME}} for the current page (year), then I have so that I can type in the year before and the year before that. But it would be so much easier if that also could be autogenerated, so it would be like pagename-1 and pagename-2 or something. So if the {{PAGENAME}} is 2000, it would automaticly write out 1999 and 1998. Possible? --Hipshot 00:21, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

Systematic violation of rules by administrators at international Wiki sites

It was recommended at Village Pump to ask my question here.[3] How are the other international Wikipedia sites monitored so that they follow the Wikipedia spirit and policies? I think there is danger that a small group of bureacrats can hold the new encyclopedia to themselves and keep out the users from editing, for example, by adding protection to certain articles for no reason, but then continuing to edit the article how only they want. This has been problems with administrators abusing their authority at the Finnish site. What can Finnish or any wiki community do, if the bureacrats of the site will not follow the rules? Another question, how are the first adminstrators of a new international Wikipedia site selected? 192.100.124.218 08:17, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Requests_for_permission#Admins_for_Wikipedias is where such admin permissions are requested. Dispute resolution is a good place to consult for conflicts. Can you explain what articles and users in particular are causing this issue, in your opinion? -- user:zanimum

Category:Top level

Hey guys,

As a way to make the experience on wikis more user friendly, I believe it is always good policy to add the "main" category to the main page. Especially in this case, the main category is called Top level, instead of "Main" and no matter how often I come back to this site, I always have to keep looking for it when it should really be one of the most accessible pages.

To be perfectly honest, I believe that the "Main" category should actually be included in the sidebar by default in future releases of the MediaWiki software and I will most likely make a suggestion to that effect. This way it would automatically be translated according to the user's language preferences in the sidebar. In the meantime, I leave it up to the admins to decide whether they simply want to categorize the main page or add it to the sidebar, and then try to spread the word in the interwiki community concerning the decision. : )

How to organize/group pages ?

I know from other wiki engines features they call namespace. This allows to group pages with a namespace. Pagenames can be reused in every namespace. For example I can introduce two namespaces "project" and "knowledege" and create in each a page called "test". Is this in mediawiki possible too? I think namespaces in mediawiki means the support of multi lingual messages.

Yes, MediaWiki contains a number of namespaces by default, and supports custom namespace creation, too. See http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:%24wgExtraNamespaces for information on setting this up. Rob Church (talk) 18:19, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

GetWiki violating MediaWiki's GPL???

plz take a look at the talk page of GetWiki's article at wikipedia- isnt it violating MediaWiki's GPL? What can be done about it? Is their code of interest? I certanly think their transparent wrapper technology is interesting - can it be made into MediaWiki, or as a MediaWiki module? Im quite sure their licence is void, unless MediaWiki gave them explicit permission, and I see no reason why MediaWiki shouldnt ignore their void licence if they can ignore a valid GPL. If you need assurance they really are violating MediaWiki's GPL, i have a finished draft of a letter to FSF to inquire about that - they however advise first contacting the copyright holders - not finding a better communication medium, Im doing this here Aryah--83.131.134.88 16:00, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Idea to Seporate Code and Tecnical Issues

The: Code & technical issues section should be refactored. It has a lot of empty space next to it, and is a good candidate for a refactor.

It currently covers a huge swath of mediawiki stuff: Coordination of the development process, maintenance of servers, and user guide for MediaWiki

I believe that this content could be resorted (but not divided (that's the beauty of a wiki) into:

MediaWiki Software User Guide

  • Editor Guide
  • Reader Guide
  • System Amin Guide
  • Sysop guide

Community Conventions and governance idea guides

  • link to specific sites for wikimedia projects
  • Possibilites for conventions
  • lists of policies that a user might want
  • lists of content licences

MediaWiki Development

  • pages about non-existant features and new ideas (some would have links to bugs)
  • pages about the design process
  • pages about the nuances of each version of sofware

WikiMedia Servers and other technical issues

  • stuff about leasing property, bandwidth, what the servers do, etc.

Important issues

Hello guys! I've read Wikipedia article about the Israeli Lebanese war of 1982 in three languages. I've found out that Hebrew, Russian and English variants present slightly different versions and base them on different sources (of different languages). I am frustrated. I don't know which version to trust. I suggest that ALL politics related articles be mark in some way and clarification be made that nobody should trust those articles' accuracy. You may never know the exact stuff anyway. At best you will know the aproximate versions. Many times authors write whatever they think is right. Heart-breaking words and expressions are used... I guess politics is a sensetive issue, so I guess clarification should be made. If any admin or "the-guys-behind-the-scene" can introduce it, then please do it. It's important. Thank you.

Why don't we use Choice Voting for all future Wikimedia Elections?

Choice voting protects majority rule while providing for the fair representation of minority views. Voters rank the candidates 1, 2, 3, and so on, in order of preference. If your top choice either is not elected or already has enough votes to win a seat, your vote goes to your next choice. No vote is wasted, and all viewpoints are represented. Choice voting would drastically reduce the number of wasted votes.

Choice voting can be used for single or multiple position elections. It is used for national elections in a number of countries including the Republic of Ireland. It is also used by a wide variety of organsations such as students' unions, charities, trade unions, universities, hospital trusts and housing associations. Choice voting is already used to elect the board of Nominet UK.

Choice voting is also called preference voting or single transferable vote (STV)

(first posted on 2006 Election questions page, no response there as yet)

If you support my proposal or would like to find out more please leave a message on my talk page.

More dead language wikis

we have a wiki in anglo-saxon, let's start one's for latin. another one would be gothic. the gothic alphabet was created from the latin, greek, and runic alphabets, so someone will have to write a language pack. also, i'd like to see more articles translated into different languages. not every language has everything, this is very true of the media pages, which tend to be english heavy.

We already have a Latin Wikipedia - and a Latin Wiktionary, Wikibooks, Wikisource and Wikiquote. the wub 11:31, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

what about more artifical language ones? how about wikipedia in Ro?

Given that he was talking about constructed languages, I think he actually meant Ro, not Romanian. I gather that a Wikipedia in Ro would only be set up if there is a number of people willing to contribute in Ro, which I think is unlikely to happen (as hardly anyone actually uses Ro). But interestingly enough, recently a Novial Wikipedia was opened, and they already have 824 articles, and are thus the fourth biggest of the seven functioning conlang Wikipedias (though only two users seem to have contributed to its content). On the Esperanto Wikipedia we have the following problem: The list w:eo:Listo de denaskaj esperantistoj used to contain the names, birth years and countries of origin of many native Esperanto speakers, including children. Parents complained that the list breaks privacy laws, so we deleted it (and started the list from scratsch including only public (i.e. well-known) people).

But it seems to be the case that even the fact that Administrators can still view the deleted versions breaks the privacy laws of certain European countries (including Finnland and Switzerland). So in order to avoid legal problems alltogether, we will have to absolutely delete the already deleted versions of the page. Is that possible? Who has the power to do so? wikipedia@home

Would it be a stupid idea? I know that Wikipedia projects don't have too much power output with servers to update the search for example. I'm sure that many people would install wikipedia@home and it would make Wikipedia much faster. What do u think about this idea? Would it be impossible? --Erkkimon 09:01, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

I'm not a developer, but I don't think that would work. The @home programs work by sending simple computations to individual computers, who solve them and send the answer back. Since Wikipedia's load comes from loading files, accessing the database, and parsing it for output, the method wouldn't work. If you'd like to ask a developer, you can do so on freenode's #wikimedia-tech. —[admin] Pathoschild 10:06, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
Of course, someone could make a Wikipedia database dump as a bittorrent file, and releave load that way, but the text would be uneditable.

Wikipedia GIS

Now that Amazon has dropped the maps.a9.com "BlockView" project, it would be good for Wikipedia to coordinate a similar Wikipedia GIS project with street level BlockView. There could be , for instance, several "Wikipedia GIS days" on which Wikipedia encourages collaborators worldwide to go out and photograph city streets ( according to Wikipedia published standards") and upload to Wikipedia servers.

the chinese communists are taking over the chinese page

the communists blocked their people's access to wikipedia. and all of sudden, it seems that they unblocked it according to some people. some still can't get connected to zh.wikipedia.org

now it may seem to be nice. however, let's think it hard. why would they continue to block other web sites and only unblock this web site? The only way they will do it is because they now have control of this chinese wikipedia web site by putting their own spies into this system.

so far, they have deleted several articles, blocked many articles such as the "two China", "the treaty b/w Russian and China's borders", etc. and if you go read about the Tibet article, it did not mention anything about how the communists invaded tibet in 1949. over all, that web site is completely pro chinese communists, it is as if that whole web site is singing love songs for the chinese communists!

it simply doesn't make sense why there are mainland Chinese volunteerring for that site, when the chinese government blocked its access. normal people certainly won't be able to connect to the zh.wikipedia.org at all. and it even advertises for people to meet in chinese cities. we know chinese cops spy on their people's "illegal" activities. so you think that the chinese cops will allow its people to gather to talk about wikipedia which is a blocked site?!

someone should take some actions to make sure that chinese communist spies are not taking over that site.

I don't know which Chinese encyclopedia you're looking at, but:
Here's the article on Two Chinas: [7], created in November 2004;
The article on the Sino-Russian treaty was deleted because it was a copyright violation. However, the article on Heixiazi Island [8] contains detailed information about this treaty, including its terms, and the response from both sides of the border;
The article on Tibet Autonomous Region [9] says: "In 1949, the People's Liberation Army defeated the small Tibetan army and ended Tibet's short independent status. The People's Republic of China calls this peaceful liberation, but some Tibetan exiles call it invasion." This is actually even more pro-Tibetan than the English Wikipedia, which refers to Tibet's status 1913-1950 as controversial;
I should also mention that the above user appears to be User:壮志满天涯, who was blocked for POV-pushing, upon which he began to vandalize dozens of pages across the Chinese Wikipedia using dozens of anonymous IPs. His vandalism has been reverted by users and admins from Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and overseas.

Suspect sudden growth of this Cebuano Wikipedia

I posted this message on the talkpage of the Cebuano Wikipedia homepage (ceb:):

This wikipedia has suddenly grown in a very strange way, regarding the number of users, average number of edits per user and per article, and all other statistics. It seems that it hasbeen fed recently by bulk submissions through bots, for example importing a partially translated database of French communes into lots of stubs. But moreimportantly, these bots imports are hiding a lot of other submissions at the sametime which like like being really spam, or lots of pages with copyright violations. Even your home page contains images with copyright violations! As your wiki currently has only 1 registered admin, it seems that he is not there and this may explain such uncontroled bulk submissions. I know you have not a lot of registered users, but I suggest you elect a few other admins to make a more permanent control on the content of your wiki. Also ask for assistance to some other admins for other wikis in languages in your region. Note that if you don't care about this issue rapidly, there's the risk that the entire wiki will be deleted after an administrative decision by the Wikimedia Foundation, due to the legal risk (this has already happened to some Wikimedia projects!) So I am suggesting you to be more vigilant. Sorry, but I don't understand Cebuano, you can contact me in French or English on my main userpage: fr:Utilisateur:Verdy_p or en:User:Verdy_P

What is the procedure exactly to place a wiki under scrutiny by a larger community? May be there should be a discussion to invite more users on somerelated wikis to join the Cebuano project and take some administration responsability. Given the recent and brutal growth of this wiki, it seems clear that just one admin is not enough, and 166 registered users only on this wiki (many of them may be inactive since long) can't control so many new articles! fr:Utilisateur:Verdy_p 00:52, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

Error in the Wikipedia Globe

On wikipedia:en:Talk:Main Page#Wikipedia globe image contains wrong devnagari symbol for "wi", it has been brought to Wikipedia's attention that the Globe contains an error. Is there a place in which I can report this? Thanks.--Ed318 20:28, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

It wasn't necessarily meant to be the symbol for "wi". Some of the symbols were chosen because they looked good on the logo not because they meant anything. Angela 20:49, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
Ok, thanks!--Ed318 20:55, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

Does anyone know what script/program is used to auto update (I presume) the amount of donations made to the Wikimedia foundation? --Remi0o 09:13, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
