Translation

I started translating a bit to French but then i wondered are we not doing some job the wikizine is already doing? Can we not work together? And how can we really get LSS information to people who want it? Like basically who's going to read it? Not those who spend their time on foundation-l but the wikimedian who wants to keep in touch with the large wikimedia-world. My current idea (after basically 20 minutes in here, so maybe a stupid one) is to send the LSS weekly. I'm a bit skeptical about people coming here to have some news. Besides people (imho) don't want long mails, basically 10 to 20 threads a week should be summarized. (:Julien:) 23:02, 10 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • I wonder if we should ask wikizine to post links to here -- it's easier for me to work with publishing things on meta than to send things off to other folk, and it's easier to collaborate with others and get translators when people can just edit things. It might not be a bad idea to let people sign up to get notice on whatever project they most frequently edit when there's a new edition. Page Title

Why use (and create!) a jargon word which people will hardly understand nor remember as a page title ? If you want to talk about a pudding recipe, call the page [ [ pudding recipe ] ] not [ [ PR ] ] ! On the other hand I think a en:Wikipedia:shortcut might be useful.

Convention: Avoid the use of acronyms in page naming unless the term you are naming is almost exclusively known only by its acronym and is widely known and used in that form (NATO, laser, radar, and scuba are good examples of acronyms that are commonly thought of as words). en:Wikipedia:Naming conventions

  • I'm up for renaming it if people think it's a good idea. Thanks and opinion

Many thanks to the people willing to do this. I don't normally read wikipedia-l or foundation-l because I just don't have enough time. I do wonder about "out of courtesy, please do not make substantial edits to other people's summaries." That seems unnecessary to me: a summary of a mailing list would seem to be a task very well suited to collaborative work on a wiki. Matt Crypto 16:07, 7 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sorting

Just a thought, but shouldn't the archives be sorted so that the newest items are at the top of the list? Not a big deal, yet, but will become one in the future. I suspect anyone interested in getting up to speed will be most interested in the more recent summaries, which implies they should be at the top (and therefore easier to find). Picking up the ball

As Improv has left, I volunteered to make sure that this project continues. I started summarizing foundation-l already for this week to get a feel for it at LSS/foundation-l-archives/2007 01 1-7. I tried to write simply and use the same terms to make translation easier. Obviously this is incomplete, but please point out any problems with my approach. I don't know that I will be able to take on summarizing the wikipedia-l list as well as foundation-l. Can anyone volunteer to take that summary on? Also I wonder what else has to be done to keep things running smoothly with the project? Is there another talk page used for this project?--BirgitteSB 04:50, 3 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Welcome here on LSS. Improv used to write every saturday or sunday, while Julien and I would work on the French translation every following monday or tuesday. But you can feel free to write at your own pace. This is the only talk page I know. Teofilo 10:55, 3 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think I have an idea of what this will be like now. I anticipate that I will upadate the summary about every other day as it is easier for me to manage while it is fresh in my mind. I have tried to use the same descriptions (Foo informs, suggests, disputes, etc.) to make translations easier but at other points I feel I need to copy the original words more closely. If you are unsure what I mean by something please make a note on the talk page and I will give an alternate wording. I am trying to focus on the new information from the list and be especially detailed where there are appeals for people to volunteer or offer feedback. Page renaming

I would like to rename (from now, 2007, leaving 2006 pages untouched) the LSS page using the week numbers.

This would enable using {{#expr:{{CURRENTWEEK}}-1}} ( = 51 today, as {{CURRENTWEEK}} = 52 - the week number changes every monday morning at zero o'clock GMT) to simplify announcement on Template:Information thread.

How about that ?

Implementation on the French ([1]) and Japanese ([2]) Wikipedias. Should I put the same sort of link on the English Wikipedia ? 404 - Not Found

The link given for "[1] Waerth informs the list that " at the top of LSS/foundation-l-archives/2007 01 1-7 http://mail.wikipedia.org/pipermail/foundation-l/2007-January/013026.html

appears to be wrong.

The page seems to have been moved to http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/foundation-l/2007-January/026502.html

Apparently WMF just got new servers for all the mailing lists and moved the archives. I just emailed wikitech-l asking for some kind of solution. I am not a technically inclined person myself, so I have no ideas short of manually altering the links which is not an appealing idea.--BirgitteSB 22:02, 9 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I have an impression that many of the links to individual emails from the summary are often wrong (linking to a wrong post, not a non-existent post).

I have no clue as to why it is so. Is it related to the migration of the list to a new server mentioned above?

If anyone knows the extent and cause of this, it would be nice to have some notice somewhere. (Or I have missed it).

That aside, I find this summary service very helpful. Thank you for your work.

Yes, we've talked about this in the post just above yours. Fortunately, although such problems do occur, they do not occur systematically, as links given on older summaries such as LSS/foundation-l-archives/2006 10 22-28 appear to remain unbroken. Teofilo 11:24, 29 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

More importantly, they are not very useful when one wants to read the whole conversation. Both Nabble and Gmane provide a very good interface for reading a certain thread, it would be great if links to them could be included. --Tgr 09:05, 15 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

lack of updates

I found making these summaries to be quite overwhelming. Especially when it came to the never-ending media licensing threads. The occasions where people felt it was necessary to send several posts a day repeating the same thing they said yesterday, and last week, and last month just made me dread this task. I haven't even been reading the list at all these past weeks. I honestly just couldn't bear to read one more message along the lines of where the summary stopped, much less try to put that message in perpective and figure if there was anything worth adding to the summary on the account of that message and then do the same with the next fifty. I hope that taking this unplanned break will refresh me enough to continue with the summaries, which I do believe are worthwhile.
