GLAM is not the only cultural heritage source

[edit]

Great project and I have only praise for it.

I want to raise an issue about word choice which in the wiki environment and not specific to this project.

Some early Wiki branding decisions adopted the term "GLAM", galleries, libraries, archives, and museums. The wiki community learned this term and so far as I know, this is mostly a wiki slang term that other institutions adopt from wiki.

The biggest tension with this term is that GLAM projects tend to exclude voices from universities, which I think is an oversight. Most wiki institutional partnerships are universities, but I think this perspective is underrepresented because universities are not GLAM so do not get invited.

Besides excluding universities I think that the majority of Wikidata partnerships are not GLAM. All sorts of institutions can contribute to shared cultural heritage, including organizations for mapping, politics, some sciences, etc. If the goal here is exclusion of non-GLAM, then great. If the goal is finding everyone with the sort of content the Wiki community gets from GLAMs and other sources, then word choice can be a barrier to some kinds of organizations and communities participating.

I wish we had a word which was inclusive all the institutions which have this kind of content to share and have aligned values. We have no such word and hardly any such wiki community documentation on this. Blue Rasberry (talk) 17:45, 17 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thank you for sharing your thoughts and I am sorry for not replying earlier. I had completely missed your post.
The focus here is indeed GLAM institutions and not educational institutions. In some cases there is an overlap with e.g. a museum at an university and in that case this project would aim to collect and include data about the museum, not data about the other parts of the educational institution. If this initiative and the methods developed turn out successful a possible future project could absolutely be towards educational institutions. The limitation is due to the type of external project grant that we have received. Regards, John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 08:51, 1 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Some ideas for filling Wikidata metadata

[edit]

Great project. Some ideas from browsing around:

  • In English Wikipedia, there are many lists of museums in the United States, but many are red links. They may, however, have Wikidata items already. So these should be reconciled against Wikidata to see if they exist there. For example, Academy Art Museum (Q54826457) has no Wikipedia article, but it did have a Wikidata item, and I've now made it an instance of art museum so it can be found via query. [1]. If they have not been already, the lists at en:List_of_museums_in_the_United_States should be processed systematically.
  • Library of Congress has pretty good authority control records for all the major museums in the world, so a systematic reconciliation of the results found in a search at LC would be useful. [2] One that I helped fix via LC was the Isle of Wight County Museum (Q19876486) [3]

If any of this is already being done, that's great. -- Fuzheado (talk) 17:03, 13 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Another idea: Wikivoyage often lists GLAM institutions that don't have Wikidata items; perhaps these could be identified and imported to Wikidata. Antony-22 (talk) 16:26, 11 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hello folks,

I hope this message finds you well! I am woundering if you woud mind if I start to implement Niklas tool on these group of pages?

Best regards,

Benoit Rochon (talk) 13:45, 25 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Benoit! I think that it would be great if you would be willing to help with that. Thanks, John Andersson (WMSE) (talk) 10:29, 17 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

@John Cummings, André Costa (WMSE), and John Andersson (WMSE): nobody claimed https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Nova_Resource:Finding-glams so it will be deleted soon. Multichill (talk) 21:13, 26 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Multichill: Thanks for highlighting this. It was on my radar. The cloud instance was used to host a tool which was never fully developed (the FindingGLAMs adaptation of Monumental), as a result I deemed it not worth claiming. /André Costa (WMSE) (talk) 08:09, 27 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
You left it hanging. It's better to just leave a note saying it can be removed. Multichill (talk) 09:39, 27 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
I pinged the main dev (on this and other tools I spotted) to get his opinion (in case there were plans of reviving it). That's why I wasn't explicit on dropping it. /André Costa (WMSE) (talk) 08:30, 25 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
