Movement roles/Work plan

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

We are pursuing three investigations in November, December and January. At the end of January we will meet to consider what we have learned, and draft recommendations for the movement. We will improve the draft iteratively from February until Wikimania in August, where will share our recommendations and finish our work.

Investigations in November, December and January

[edit]

Views of broad range of Wikimedians

[edit]

The largest investigation is to collect a broad range of views from Wikimedians who already have some knowledge of how the movement is working. We are seeking answers to our initial questions in four ways:

  1. We invite wikimedians to write their answers on meta. Please let us know your thoughts here.
  2. We invite wikimedians to contribute to the blog on each questions. We will send out an email weekly inviting comment on a different question. Please share your views here, too.
  3. And, to ensure broad and rich responses, we will reach out and interview other wikimedians.
  4. Finally, we are considering an in-person discussion at the celebration of the 10th anniversary of Wikimedia in San Francisco the weekend of 15th and 16th of January to hear any views from those attending that have not already been shared

We would appreciate your suggestions on:

  • How to encourage Wikimedians to contribute their ideas on meta
  • How to stimulate a broad and lively conversation on our blogs
  • Which individuals and groups we should be sure to include

Movement fact base

[edit]

In parallel, we are building a fact base of all groups and entities in the Wikimedia movement in the hope of drawing an accurate map. There is not yet a comprehensive or accurate map of all of groups that make up the Wikimedia movement. Please help us by sharing your knowledge, and correcting mistakes.

"Peer" organizations

[edit]

We are looking at other global organizations to find out if they have learning that we can use. This builds on the already comprehensive work of the strategy team. Please let us know of peer organizations and movements you would regards as a peer of Wikimedia, and what you think we should learn from them.

In-person meeting at the end of January

[edit]

At the in-person meeting in Frankfurt on 29/30 Jan, we will aim to:

  • Synthesize what we have heard from Wikimedians
  • Understand any lessons that might be drawn from peer organizations
  • Draft the charter and recommendations

Projected work for February through August

[edit]

After the meeting in Frankfurt we will develop the drafts iteratively for the chapters meeting in Berlin in March 2011, and then the board and Wikimania in Haifa. A list of issues that it may contain has already been suggested.
