Following there is a list of known live mirrors of Wikimedia wikis.
What is a live mirror and in what way are they harmful? What is not a live mirror?
[edit]A live mirror is one that polls a WMF wiki for the page data every time a user requests that page from the mirror. Thus, if en:cat was edited 3 times yesterday on enwiki, but 50,000 users hit the "cat" article on the live mirror yesterday, then yesterday enwiki got 50,000 requests from the mirror for the "cat" page data. A live mirror is not a mirror that merely polls WMF for data needed to keep the mirror up-to-date. That type of mirrors would only have requested the en:cat contents thrice yesterday from enwiki, in order to update the mirror database to reflect the revisions.
The first type of mirror puts more strain on WMF servers. The second type of mirror could actually be helpful to WMF by allowing users to get the content from the mirror rather than from WMF, thereby taking load off the WMF servers, although one concern is that it could also draw potential editors away from Wikipedia. However, because the content is licensed CC-by-SA anyway, there is not much that can be done about other sites reposting such content, even if it were desirable to stop them.[1] Facebook community pages are an example of a mirror that has been deemed acceptable by WMF.[2]

- The issue with live mirrors is that they aren't hosting their own copy of the articles, but instead using the live Wikimedia page(s) where our servers get hit for the pageloads on their site. That's against Wikimedia's terms of use, but not a copyright issue. We just politely ask for them to host a local copy using compliant caching HTTP proxies, with a reasonable storage cache size for their traffic (they can have it auto-update once a day or the like to keep it current, they should honor the cache time indicated, and can use conditional or HEAD requests to test if their cached version is up-to-date; this will also greatly improve the performance of their site) and if they don't, we can fiddle around with technical stuff to make it harder for them to use the live page.
- Such compliant caching proxy can be implemented standard programs, such as (open-source and free) Squid or others, which are simple to deploy on a separate server without modifying their site (they may only need to change the URL if this proxy is not configured in "transparent" mode; and such proxy can be used to cache contents from multiple remote sites, not just Wikimedia). In addition, most standard web servers include libraries to support compliant local caches, they work exactly like client-side caches in web browsers, except that they must take care of not sharing private session data of their users (session id's, cookies, and form data submitted via GET query strings or POST) and should use their own "user-agent" string (without private extension tags).
