Goals and measures of success

[edit]

Project goal

[edit]
This statement describes what will be accomplished if the project is successful.
The meeting will establish a coherent plan for leveraging existing Wikimedia community resources and external partners to reignite the momentum around the GLAM-Wiki US Consortium initiative.
This meeting has purposefully been scheduled immediately following GLAM Bootcamp, an effort to train and empower a new contingent of existing Wikimedians to support GLAM projects. Sunday evening will include a networking event where Bootcampers will meet with GLAM-Wiki US Consortium advisory group members to establish camaraderie and renew commitment to the initiative.

Measures of success

[edit]
Provide a list of measurable criteria you will use to determine if your project was successful. You will need to report on the success of your project according to these measures after your project is completed.
This meeting will be considered a success when it produces a list of agreed upon action steps for advisory group members to carry forth in the coming year, and if these action steps are carried out within the timeline established by the group.

Project scope and activities

[edit]

This section describes what will happen if this project is funded.

Impact

[edit]

This section will describe how the proposed project is related to the Wikimedia mission and Wikimedia's strategic priorities. It will also provide information about other benefits to Wikimedia communities.

Fit to strategy

[edit]
How will this project support the key organizational objectives of,
  • increasing reach (more people being able to access or contribute to Wikipedia or our other projects),
  • participation (more people actually contributing),
  • quality (more useful content or higher quality existing content),
  • credibility (more trust in our projects),
  • organizational maturity and effectiveness (how it will move your chapter or the Wikimedia community as a whole forward),
  • or financial sustainability (how it will help your chapter achieve more in the long run)?
This statement should address at least one of the strategic priorities listed here specifically. See WMF Grants Program criteria for decisionmaking.
The GLAM-Wiki US Consortium is unique in its aim to bring together cultural professionals and Wikipedians on common ground, and the Consortium's stated Principles go far in illustrating these shared values. The most relevant of these principles is the fourth statement...
(GLAM-Wiki US Consortium members) believe that the missions and interests of both Wikimedia and cultural institutions can be met without compromise if both communities actively collaborate in a spirit of openness and empathy for each other's interests. Wikipedia should strive to become a welcoming and safe place for cultural institutions and professionals, while cultural institutions and professionals should be full, participating members of the Wikipedia online community.
The GLAM-Wiki US Consortium, and indeed the broader GLAM-Wiki initiative, innately support the organizational objects of the movement. Wikimedia's mission to freely and openly share knowledge aligns closely with the missions of cultural institutions, who have an ethical obligation to make their collections and resources as accessible as possible.
The GLAM-WIKI initiative serves as a plank for many of the objectives and priorities in the Strategic Plan. These include:
  • Expanding public awareness and support for the Wikimedia movement,
  • Encouraging diversity by conducting outreach among groups that have the potential to bring new expertise to the projects, and;
  • Connecting Wikimedia projects with the work of institutions of culture and learning

Benefits

[edit]
If your project will benefit a specific online community, please list that here. For example, English Wiktionary.
This project will benefit the GLAM-Wiki community within the US, including both Wikimedians and cultural professionals, by moving forward with the established goals of the GLAM-Wiki US Consortium. GLAM-Wiki projects may benefit any relevant Wikimedia project in any language, depending on the project being undertaken.
Provide a brief statement (about 1 paragraph) about how your project is related to other work in the Wikimedia movement. Does your project fit into a work area such as GLAM, Education, Organization Development, Editor Retention, or Outreach?
The GLAM-Wiki US Consortium will determine the future of the GLAM-Wiki movement in the United States, and impact the movement globally. The efforts of GLAM-Wiki in the United States hinge on the ability to scale up financial sustainability and participation to meet demand while also inculcating best practices within the participating institutions and WikiProjects to ensure GLAM-Wiki maintains the goodwill of the community. The advisory group meeting will be aimed at solving these longstanding problems organizationally, through setting up a functional group members and institutional representatives, and he participation of key stakeholders like Adrianne, Bob, and Jenny will help ensure the Consortium is successfully launched and productive.
If successful, does your project have the potential to be replicated successfully by other individuals, groups, or organizations? Please explain how in 1 - 2 sentences.
The purpose of the meeting is to have a one-time strategy session to kickstart the GLAM-Wiki US Consortium; the Consortium will provide assistance and encourage best practices which will be used by Wikimedia projects and cultural institutions in the future. The Consortium is also being set up to put into place an organization that supports GLAM projects on Wikimedia (especially in areas not supported by chapters), which may be a useful model for other countries or regions.
Please list any other benefits that this project will produce.
This event will establish camaraderie among the advisory group members, as well as with the new class of GLAM Bootcamp participants who will network with advisory group members during a planned dinner on Sunday evening. The overlap of these two events will bring together new GLAM-Wikimedia volunteers with those who have been involved for some time, deepening the motivation for both parties to go forth with shared goals, and solidifying the support-system that the GLAM-Wiki community is proud to have as its core strength.
