Project scope
[edit]Tamil population is spread across India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia & Singapore; significant diaspora communities are present in places like Canada, USA, Australia, Europe, Middle East, Mauritius and South Africa. We the Tamil Wikimedians, successfully conducted our first competition - the 2010 Tamil Wikipedia article contest last year.[4][5] This contest helped to increase the profile of Tamil Wikipedia and has been one of the reasons behind the accelerated growth of Tamil wiki projects during the past year. Building on that experience, we have decided to organise a media contest to attract non-text contributors to Tamil Wiki projects and also increase the quantity of media content related to Tamil and Tamil people available in Wikimedia Commons. The duration of the contest will be 3 months. We have already reached out to and received letters of support (for outreach and publicity) from a number of Tamil organisations like Thamizmanam (the leading Tamil blog aggregator), Nudpam (a nonprofit Tamil information technology organization) and Noolaham Foundation (a non-profit foundation for digitizing Tamil published content).
The relevant RFC and discussion where community consensus was reached is here. The English version of the contest rules page is here
Project goal
[edit]The goal of the contest is to gain quality media contributions and attract quality photographers, videographers, graphic and voice contributors to Tamil Wiki projects. We aim to generate interest among non-text creative community about Wikimedia in general and Tamil wiki in particular. We aim to gain a minimum of 3000 files and 100 new contributors through this contest.
Non-financial requirements
[edit]- Permission for use of UploadCampaigns extension of the Upload wizard in Wikimedia commons for this contest.
- Permission for use of Wikimedia logo and brand in outreach efforts.
- A blog post in Wikimedia blog after the project is complete.
Fit to strategy
[edit]- This contest will be very useful to bring in people from the large Tamil professional photographer community to Wikimedia and increase their participation in Wikimedia projects. It will also bring in other non-textual contributors like videographers, illustrators, graphic artists, voice artists, map makers to Wikimedia projects.
- Currently a large number of articles related to Tamils and places where Tamils live are not illustrated. There is a also an marked paucity of audio, video and animated content in and related to Tamil. This contest will increase the number of images of historical value and quality media files required for illustrating Tamil wiki projects and Tamil related subjects in other language wikiprojects.
- This will be an excellent outreach opportunity to popularise Tamil wiki projects online and offline
Other benefits
[edit]- This contest will increase the profile of Tamil wiki projects and Commons in Tamil print and electronic media and will increase our visibility offline.
Measures of success
[edit]We would deem the contest a success, if we can achieve a minimum of
- 3000 files (images, audio and video) uploaded to commons
- 100 new contributors
Team members (optional)
[edit]- Coordinators
