Activities

[edit]
March 14, 2012

I and Ryan Kaldari arrived in Santiago, Chile on March 14, 2012. That evening we met with Osmar Valdebenito of Wikimedia Chile, who coordinated the GLAM-WIKI conference and our visit, Melanie Dulong de Rosnay of Creative Commons France, and Beatriz Busaniche of Wikimedia Argentina. We had dinner at a local Santiago restaurant and talked about the plan for the following day's GLAM-WIKI conference. This was the first time we had any detail on the conference schedule, aside from date, time and location, so it was important to get the details down. Kaldari and I learned that our talk would be possibly similar to Osmar's opening speech, which would cover notable activities in the GLAM-WIKI movement internationally and what GLAM-WIKI is and the Wikimedia movement. I found myself rather flustered, as it sounded like my portion of our talk (not Kaldari's) would overlap with Osmar's. Upon return back to our hotel we collaborated to revamp aspects of the presentation, which was changed to focus specifically on the United States and was also written to bring aspects of Chile into the presentation. I also removed areas of the presentation that would explain what GLAM-WIKI was and the importance of the movement within open knowledge, museums and Wikimedia.

March 15, 2012

That morning Osmar met us at our hotel, along with other presenters, and we went to the venue. The venue, which was originally supposed to be at the DUOC-UC Institute in downtown Santiago, had been changed. It was changed to another DUOC-UC location outside of downtown, in the San Joaquín area. Upon our arrival we were greeted by other presentations and the moderator; we were also given a sheet with the schedule on it.

We had a bit of confusion with the A/V staff about whether we were going to be showing our Powerpoint on our laptop(s) or if they were going to display it. After about 40 minutes, it was determined we would be showing it ourselves. This could be chalked up to the language barrier, since Kaldari and I have weak skills in Spanish. While this was taking place, Osmar and Beatriz were being interviewed by media outlets.

We spoke third, following Osmar's opening talk about what GLAM and the Wikimedia movement is, and a presentation by Roxana Donoso of the Library of the National Congress. Donoso shared a collaborative project that the Library had worked on utilizing Wikisource with help from Wikimedia Chile. The talk went over time, and a break was called for about a half hour. Kaldari spearheaded setting up the tech needs for our talk with the AV staff and our presentation and video tested to run smoothly. Our talk went well, we were happy to have a translator who presented to those who attended, in Spanish. I presented on projects in the United States and stressed how while we have had content donated to us related to Chile, it was not from the Chilean people, and how important it is for GLAMs to step up and provide that content themselves. This resonated with nods in the audience. Kaldari discussed Wiki Takes and Wiki Loves monuments, discussing how these projects are crowdsourced by Wikimedians and the impact that the projects have had regarding content and partnerships. Kaldari fielded multiple questions about these projects.

The final part of the conference was a round table discussion with Beatriz, Osmar, Melanie, Roxana Donoso and Claudio Ruiz of Creative Commons Chile. The conversation went over an hour and discussion focused on copyright laws and freedoms in Chile.

We were informed, previously, that 120 people had confirmed to attend the event. Approximately 80 people attended, many of them students, and Wikimedia Chile reports that individuals did attend from various GLAMs.

March 16, 2012

We had scheduled additional days in Chile to allow for meetings with GLAM staff. Unfortunately, no meetings were scheduled. The evening of March 16, Kaldari had been scheduled to speak about volunteer opportunities in Wikimedia (specifically MediaWiki) at the AIEP university. The talk was heavily attended by students and staff. The director of the school was extremely welcoming, and presented Kaldari with an award for his lecture and held a reception afterwards. This was not related to my original grant request, but, provided me with a chance to discuss the movement and volunteer and fellowship opportunities with the director of the school and how WMF can work with the University to provide opportunities for Chilean students.

Project goal and measures of success

[edit]

Project goal

[edit]

Goal: To assist in the development and formation of partnerships between Wikimedia Chile and GLAMs in the greater Santiago region, and beyond.

Project scope and list of activities: As per the request for Wikimedia Chile, I will be participating in a series of meetings with GLAMs in Santiago, Chile. I will also be speaking alongside members of Wikimedia Chile, Creative Commons, Wikimedia Argentina, Wikimedia Foundation and the Library of the Chilean National Congress at the GLAM WIKI 2012 event on March 15. For the three days that I will be in Santiago, I will be meeting with staff from GLAMs, alongside Wikimedia Chile, to share my experiences and roles as Wikipedian in Residence at the Smithsonian Institution, and providing advice on how to proceed with partnership opportunities.

Summary

I did meet one goal of my scope and goal: participated in the GLAM-WIKI Santiago conference on March 15. Our presentation was well executed, and well received. However, no meetings were scheduled with, nor was I introduced to, any GLAM professionals.

Measures of success

[edit]

"Aside from having a successful series of meetings and a successful event, overall success will be judged by the development of relationships between Wikimedia Chile and GLAMs. While this will not happen overnight, success will be measured in terms of a long term goal to solidify relationships and develop at least 1 to 2 new partnerships in the area. I will continue to advise on these matters after my trip." (from Meta)

  • No meetings were scheduled with GLAM professionals.
  • I did participate in an event that had a healthy attendance and was produced smoothly.
  • I have yet to hear about any new partnerships opportunities, however, continued follow up will take place.

I do feel that I was not utilized as a successful outreach Wikimedian while in Chile regarding GLAM-WIKI.

I had originally submitted this grant request because I am a volunteer for the GLAM-WIKI movement. I did have a chance to meet a group of feminist activists whom I had dinner with on Thursday night. The dinner led to a great outreach opportunity and connection, which will be a connection that has been very valuable for my gender gap work as a Community Fellow. Kaldari and I also met an inspiring and passionate group of educators at AIEP during his presentation. I connected strongly with the director of the university, who has expressed strong interest in helping his students learn about fellowship opportunities, global education and other related outreach opportunities. However, these are covered moreso by my fellowship role, not as a volunteer.

Lessons learned

[edit]

What lessons were learned that may help others succeed in similar projects?

  • I would work on my Spanish language skills. I have decided that after graduation I would like to take lessons. I think that this could have helped in a million ways in Chile, and will benefit me in the future. I have traveled internationally and been lucky to meet many people who speak English in most countries, but this was quite eye opening to not have that luxury.
  • The planning for the conference took place during the summer holiday season in Chile. A lot of people were slow at responding or non-responsive and that was frustrating for me.
  • I should have taken my own personal initiative to reach out to cultural institutions about my visit to Chile. I did take the time to reach out to women's groups, but, not GLAMs, as I thought that would be organized by the conference organizers, Wikimedia Chile. I was pretty surprised, despite numerous conversations before our arrival, that no meetings were scheduled.

What impact did the project have on WMF mission goals of Increased Reach, Increased Quality, Increased Credibility, Increased and Diversified Participation?

  • Wikimedia Chile states that approximately 80 people attended the GLAM-WIKI conference. I would say about 60 listened to myself & Kaldari speak.
  • I have started working on a collaborative project with a Chilean art student whom I met at the conference. It's her first time editing and we are writing about a Chilean female artist.
  • I attended a dinner with 10 men and women from a feminist journalism group in Santiago. Strong connections were made and follow-up will be made regarding women's outreach opportunities in the near future.

Reporting and documentation of expenditures

[edit]

Documentation of expenditures has been received by WMF.

Did you send WMF documentation of all expenses paid for with grant funds?

Yes. I have sent Winifred a copy of my passport receipt for the $140. I can gather receipts for the few that I do have, but, I do not have receipts for things like Metro rides and some restaurants.

I did utilize my entire per diem while in Chile for food, water, transportation and the cost for me to enter the country, which I was unaware about until after the grant was approved. If I would have known about this cost I would have requested additional funding. See below.

Details of expenditures:

March 10
  • Arrival into Chile, all US citizens must pay $140 US to enter the country.

All three days of my visit in Santiago I had to purchase my own lunch, snack and dinner. This doesn't include expenses incurred for transportation (Metro, taxi). I handled my own accommodations and breakfast was served at the hotel.

Will you be requesting re-allocation of remaining grant funding?

No.

Will you be returning unused funds to the Wikimedia Foundation?

No.

[edit]

Will you be requesting an extension or were you granted an extension?

No.
