Project scope

[edit]

The organizers have received support from Sarai and the institute will be providing the venue free of charge for the event. The project volunteers will arrange for the proper organization and execution of the event from 13 December 2011 through 15 December 2011.

Sarai is potentially an institute which can support Wikimedia activities in North India.

We are expecting ~60 participants at this point of time.

Project goal

[edit]

New Delhi is the largest city in North India and the seat of the National Legislature. A large number of Central Government Ministries and Departments are located in this region. The Wikimedia Movement must direct its attention and focus over here in order to understand why despite such penetration of education, wealth and internet connectivity do we not have a sizeable Wikipedian community in this part of the country.

The goal of this project is to make inroads for outreach and to establish a strong community of Wikimedia volunteers in New Delhi, NCR. The project volunteers intend to use the interest created by the Tenth Anniversary of the Wikipedia project in order to attract a very keen group of participants to the celebrations and to reach out to the general public through print and internet media.

Non-financial requirements

[edit]
  • Wikipedia 10 merchandise

Fit to strategy

[edit]

This event will help sensitize the general public of the NCR towards Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. Our focus would be on communicating to the public that Wikimedia projects require participation from the general public and these wikis are editable by anyone with internet access.

This event falls within the scope of the Wikimedia Foundation's strategy to increase readership and participation in the parts of the developing world.

Other benefits

[edit]

This event will be a part of the WP10 celebrations which are being organized by volunteers around the country. We expect to have a good understanding about the quantity and quality of interest in Wikimedia projects in this part of the world.

Measures of success

[edit]

High levels of participation at the event, increase in Wikipedia readership and contributions from New Delhi and good coverage in the news media.
