Goal

This project has the following goals:
  1. Promoting the quality and quantity of articles on the Arabic Wikipedia.
  2. Help recruiting new volunteer editors to labedit Wikipedia by supporting the Education Program and holding edit-a-thons.
  3. Help recruiting new volunteer ambassadors and professors to assign and help their students edit Wikipedia.
  4. Organizing training sessions for students and volunteers.
  5. Covering needed equipment costs for holding workshops which will support sustainability of the program in Egypt.
  6. Promoting competition between volunteers and editors.
  7. Attracting photographers to take photos and share them under free licence.

The aim of this project is to encourage and facilitate the capturing and upload of photographs of Egyptian heritage sites or monuments under free licensing during heritage month (September). This includes encouraging those who upload media, to write about their monument of choice on Wikipedia, Through this competition we aim to not only increase the quality of photographs on Commons, but also the number of active participants. We aim to inspire participants to contribute to Wikipedia in terms of improving articles, creating articles or uploading new content and media which can be used on Wikipedia or other related Wiki projects. This is the 3th year that WM EG will run the competition locally, in the last year the competition added more than 6000 free photo to commons

  • 1 photography trip.
  • Advertising Campaign online and offline.
  • Photographers editing workshop (to help them upload photos and use them on Wikipedia)
  • Prize Awarding event.

  • Organizing 4 edit-a-thons for new/existing users in Egypt.

The main objective of the writing competition is to create awareness of the Wikipedia among the potential younger users within the Egyptian community.

this will help in increare Wikipedia contributors in Egypt and The Education program volunteers and professors encourage new students to create user accounts and edit Wikipedia.

Measures of success

By the end of the grant we expect the below success

  • +2500 photos uploaded to Wikimedia commons.
  • +5 Million bytes added to the Arabic Wikipedia.
  • Recruitment +100 new editors/contributors
  • Increasing skills for editing for the new users by the edit-a-thons
  • +10 Featured articles nominated on the Arabic Wikipedia.
  • To get at least 30 new active female contributors for Wikipedia.
  • +600 new articles added to the Arabic Wikipedia.
