DescriptionWashington Square United Methodist Church.jpg
The Washington Square United Methodist Church at 135-139 West 4th Street between Sixth Avenue and Washington Square West was built in 1860 and was designed by Charles Hadden in the Romanesque Revival style. The congregation dates from 1842 and, althtough informally known as the "Fourth Street Church," was officially the Sullivan Street Church until 1870, when the name was changed to the Washington Square Methodist Episcopal Church, which became "United Methodist" when it merged with other congregations in 1939. In the 1960s, it was known as the "Peace Church" because of the aid it gave to draft resistors, and later it nurtured the Harvey Milk School, a public school for gay and lesbian youths. In 2004, the congregation moved to Trinity Chapel on Washington Square South, which it rented, and in 2005 it sold the church to be developed as residences; the parsonage next door had already been sold. The church is now the "Novare" condominium. The building is located with the Greenwich Village Historic District.
