Summary
DescriptionTalève d'allen a l'ouémé supérieur.jpg |
They are pretty secretive birds. According to the little information that has been collected in Africa, they are mostly observable during the first two hours of the day, after which they retreat to thick cover.
Throughout their area, they are considered erratic, i.e. intermittent or irregular inhabitants. They swim willingly, but if they feel in danger, they run away under cover, head down and tail up, showing off their underside caudals. When they take off, their flight is brief and we see their long legs and their long toes dangling behind the tail. The nest is constructed of grass and reeds in the shape of a ball topped with a dome. It is usually suspended at a low height above the water. It is sometimes even a floating nest in which the female lays 2 to 5 eggs. There is no information on incubation and nesting time. It is assumed that, as with most rallids, juveniles are nidifuges. This image was taken in the classified forests of Upper Ouémé in the north of the country |
