Summary
It has two kinds of teeth: sharper at the front of the jaws and flatter at the back. As you get older, sharp teeth flatten to crush the shells of molluscs and other slow but well-protected prey that form a larger part of your diet. The scales of his skin are small, round and do not cover the scales nearby. The limbs are well developed and allow the animal not to crawl whether walking or running. Semi-aquatic, the Varan du Nil is a very good swimmer and an adult can stay under water for more than half an hour. The nostrils are placed towards the top of the skull to breathe better on the surface. The tail is used as a propulsion unit, being vertically flattened - but also used to climb. The tongue is used as an olfactory organ and is very sensitive. It has the smell in "stereo", that is to say that each fork of the tongue detects odors independently. In the same way that we can determine the direction of a sound thanks to our two ears, this monitor can know the direction of a smell with great precision. The body is of a color ranging from dark gray to black with yellowish spots. The skull is barred with a black stripe at the level of the eye. The yellow spots form 3 to 9 bands between the shoulders and the pelvis then turn into stripes along the entire length of the tail. The limbs are spotted, the belly is white or yellow with black stripes. There are albino individuals, which can sometimes be purchased from a specialized breeder / importer.
