English: 2066/5000
African elephants (Loxodonta) are a genus of elephants, proboscidian mammals of the elephantidae family. The two current species of this genus, the Savannah Elephant and the Forest Elephant were formerly considered as the same species. The African savanna elephant - Loxodonta africana (Blumenbach, 1797) -, the best-known African species, has longer and larger ears than those of the Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus). It also has a larger average size and a concave back. Males and females have external tusks, and are usually less hairy than their Asian cousins. The park of the Pendjari Biosphere Reserve is an environment where elephants like to live and reproduce with peace of mind. Because of its ivory, the elephant is a very endangered species. What can be done to reduce the poaching risk of this pachyderm in West Africa? The Pendjari Biosphere Reserve, like the other reserves in the world, is home to a very powerful pachyderm, the elephant. The elephant is a very powerful animal and very enduring. Able to walk hundreds of miles, the elephant is a pachyderm that is not afraid of anything, except poachers who tend him very often, murderous ambushes. Poaching is one of the worst things in the park of the Punjari. "I hate these poachers who break into the park at night to go to work," said an unnamed forester. They are responsible for the death of many elephants in the park, he said. The pachyderm population is small in West Africa, and mainly concentrated in the Pendjari and WAP cross-border park that covers the Pendjari as well as protected areas in Burkina Faso and Niger - where it does not exceed 6,000 individuals. "Says Jean-Marc Froment, conservation officer at African Parks. That is why it is urgent to do everything possible for an effective fight against poachers.
