This page is for requesting help on anything, but in particular should be used when requesting help for making a submission or putting forward a case for a scholarship, ie,e., for help relating to the WikiCon Australia 2024 Scholarships and WikiCon Australia 2024 Submissions pages.

Don't forget to categorise your Submissions

[edit]

Remember to add the Category:Wikicon Australia 2024 submissions to the bottom of your submission. (only then can it be see by the committee) MargaretRDonald (talk) 04:00, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Scholarship application

[edit]

I'm finding it hard to work out how to make a scholarship application for WikiCon 2024. Do I just go into Edit source on the scholarship page and answer those questions? The page says "Applicaton Form" but there is no application form in the usual sense. Do I make a post like this under the Heading "Application Form?" and just give reasons why I want to attend taking into account the questions for consideration? LPascal (talk) 02:03, 9 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

@LPascal: I've had a go and making it clearer (not that I'm involved in the organising here, I'm just a wikitext nerd trying to help!). The idea is that you put your username in the box on the Scholarships page, and that takes you to edit a page with pre-filled text and you edit that to add your answers to the questions. Other scholarships applications are all listed there too so you can look at how others have done it. Sam Wilson 04:08, 14 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I had the same problem, and I appreciate Sam is just a member trying to help, but I am still confused. I dont find a page with prefilled text. It talks of "This site is for the documentation and discussion of Wikimedia projects, such as Wikipedia" Franciscusmagister (talk) 09:36, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Franciscusmagister: Oops! You're right, the preload text wasn't working. Try again now, it should work. I fixed the template name. Sam Wilson 10:35, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
thanks, Sam, that advances things a little. but why is this process so strange and complicated?? I cant even find what the costs of enrolment are Franciscusmagister (talk) 10:48, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Franciscusmagister: It's reasonably normal for wiki events to use wiki pages for submitting things, if that's the strangeness you mean. As for the cost, I think the conference is free (the scholarships are for travel and accomodation). Sam Wilson 10:56, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Closing date

[edit]

This closing date is far too early. Could we make the closing date some time in September, preferably a month after we have run a central banner again? We should have some of the shape of a program by mid August which could be put up as a tentative program (also by mid August...or close to). We so far have very few submissions and some of mine I had planned to withdraw.. MargaretRDonald (talk) 01:49, 3 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Meeting 4/7/2024 decided to keep this date. MargaretRDonald (talk) 13:20, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Help on colours in a clickable button

[edit]

{{helpme}} Can someone help me in making the clickable button which appears below "Catering requirements" and reads "register your food preferences on Humanitix" have white writing on a dark blue background. MargaretRDonald (talk) 01:20, 4 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Done Gnangarra (talk) 12:26, 4 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, @Gnagnarra: (I did notice you had some time ago but didn't make it to this page at thhe time. MargaretRDonald (talk) MargaretRDonald (talk) 07:06, 10 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

If registration is to be shifted, the other button is also reqired

[edit]

@Samwilson: Registration requires the original registration on the home page plus all the words about safe space and conduct. Plus the button to humanitix for food requirements. If you do move it I would want all the current functionality of the current registration section, i.e., the ability to see & email all registered to participants, and to add a chat. My preference is for no change at all in the current registration. MargaretRDonald (talk) 21:08, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

@MargaretRDonald: That makes sense. I wasn't really suggesting moving the registration info, I was just wondering if Event:WikiCon Australia 2024/Registration needed to be kept. It sounds like it can be redirected to Event:WikiCon Australia 2024 though, so I'll do that. Sam Wilson 23:00, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Samwilson: I have completely lost track of whether anything makes sense, given huge amount of editing of these pages since (and not before) they went live. Can you make sure that whatever is done it is all OK? MargaretRDonald (talk) 23:16, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
@MargaretRDonald: Yes definitely! And sorry about all the noise. I was basically only trying to resolve two things: finish moving all 'Event:Adelaide Wikicon 2024' pages, and change Wikicon to WikiCon (with an uppercase C) in all page titles. Sam Wilson 23:24, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Samwilson: Thanks for doing all that. 11:02, 8 July 2024 (UTC) MargaretRDonald (talk) 11:02, 8 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Please change the title Presentation Format

[edit]

@Samwilson: Please change the title Presentation Format to List of Proposals or something else more suitable. And can we get rid of some of the non-proposals. (I couldn't see how to change the new additional tab.) MargaretRDonald (talk) 13:20, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

@MargaretRDonald: Do you mean get rid of the Event:WikiCon Australia 2024/Presentation formats page altogether, or just change its label in the menu? And good point about the non-proposals in that category, I'll get that sorted. The subtabs can be edited in the {{Adelaide Wikicon 2024 header}} template. Sam Wilson 13:42, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think the tab "Presentation formats" is redundant. The types of presentation are all listed under submissions.
I am bothered by "submissions" suddently morphing into "proposals". I think two names for the one thing is confusing. To me the only useful thing on this button is the "List of submissions: MargaretRDonald (talk) 13:53, 5 July 2024 (UTC) PS. I think you have done a nice job. Thanks. MargaretRDonald (talk) 13:55, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Good point about 'Presentation formats'. I've removed it from the tab, and will redirect the page to the Submissions one. I'm not sure about 'proposals', I've used 'submissions' everywhere I think? I agree that one name is clearer. Actually, now I've made a all-submissions page I think it's probably easier to add that at the bottom of the Submissions page anyway — there's not going to be more than a thousand I don't suppose so it won't make the page too long! :) Sam Wilson 13:59, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
@MargaretRDonald: One last question, should the Registration page be added to the tab menu? Sam Wilson 14:06, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Samwilson: If it can be done with no dramas, yes. And could you also repeat what you did for the submissions to produce somewhat more elegant lists for Reports and for Scholarship applications? MargaretRDonald (talk) 17:21, 5 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
@MargaretRDonald: I've done both reports and scholarships now. Sam Wilson 03:47, 14 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Could the submissions page and the scholarships page

[edit]

@AlphaLemur, Aliceinthealice, and BindiS: Hi @Samwilson:Could the submissions page and the scholarships page be modified so that submissions (and possibly scholarship applications) can be withdrawn and not show up in the lists? MargaretRDonald (talk) 08:22, 12 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

@MargaretRDonald: Do you want the submission pages to still be on Meta? Or just not listed all together? If you need them to be private, then they need to be deleted from Meta Wiki, because there's no way to have them be here but not visible to everyone (even if they're not actually listed on the Submissions page they'll still be findable by searching or entering their page titles). Sam Wilson 12:12, 12 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think people should be able to withdraw submissions. There is no reason for the submission to be private. But the person may wish to have that submission page deleted as well. MargaretRDonald (talk) 23:37, 13 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
@MargaretRDonald: We could add a message to {{WikiCon Australia 2024 submissions header}} to tell people that they can withdraw their submission by adding the {{delete}} template to the page, would that do? Or say that they should leave a comment on the talk page? Sam Wilson 03:54, 14 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi Sam, I think that sounds like a great solution - we could add this to the instructions on both pages?
From what I understand they then have to be deleted by Meta Wiki administrators - which none of us are...? Aliceinthealice (talk) 01:24, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Aliceinthealice: Yep that's right, but I think admins will be reasonably speedy about deleting when requested. It's not going to be a large number of pages, I wouldn't imagine. Sam Wilson 02:12, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
That's great - I'll look at adding these to the instructions :) Aliceinthealice (talk) 04:49, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Sam. Good move. So much easier than having to look oneself. MargaretRDonald (talk) 13:03, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Talk pages

[edit]

I wonder if Event:WikiCon Australia 2024/Help should be moved here to Event talk:WikiCon Australia 2024, so that DiscussionTools works and people can more easily reply etc? And maybe all the talk pages of Registration and Submissions should be redirected to this central place, to avoid fragmenting things? Currently there are the following talk pages: {{Special:PrefixIndex/Event talk:WikiCon Australia 2024}} {{ping|MargaretRDonald|Gnangarra|p=}} and others, what do you think? Sam Wilson 04:00, 14 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Sounds like a good idea. Thanks Sam. MargaretRDonald (talk) 01:37, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
@MargaretRDonald: Okay, done. I've moved all the other threads to be here, and we can create archive pages here as required. Sam Wilson 02:18, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Sam MargaretRDonald (talk) 13:05, 15 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

After registering under the Host Message heading and the “Travel Sponsorship Application” subheading - the application link opens the Brisbane 2023 WikiCon Google form for applying for travel sponsorship. https://events.humanitix.com/wikicon-australia-2024/ Bottle Top Bill (talk) 05:29, 26 July 2024 (UTC)|Reply

Not sure what happened with humanitix, but to complete your registration: Go to the home page and use the registration button at the top of the page. MargaretRDonald (talk) @AlphaLemur:

'other things to do' suggestions

[edit]

I have added a free exhibition from the NAA which will be open at the State Library under a heading of 'other things to do'. This exhibition was suggested by a community member of something which may be of interest to the group. --AlphaLemur (talk) 05:05, 1 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

WHERE IS IT

[edit]

Do I just go to Adelaide? Seems somewhat of a vague address. Do I use GPS to navigate to precise town centre, then stand with foghorn and yell my suggested Wikipedia edits in CAPSLOCK ? Trackpantsboner (talk) 13:53, 6 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Apologies, we've been organising details and releasing the information as it's finalised. The conference will be held at the Ibis Hotel, Grenfell Street. https://www.ibisadelaide.com.au/ BindiS (talk) 07:00, 8 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
