Wikimedia and Scientific Events in Brazil
"Wikimedia e Ciência: Potencialidades na Extensão e Difusão Científica", em Bauru-USP
On October 30, Wiki Movimento Brasil, in partnership with the Bauru School of Dentistry at the University of São Paulo (FOB-USP), organized an event titled "Wikimedia and Science: Potentialities in Scientific Outreach and Dissemination." This academic activity aimed to promote the sharing of research, projects, and experiences related to open science and the use of free digital platforms.
The event attracted over 80 students and researchers from various fields and locations, fostering research presentations and discussions on topics such as open science, scientific dissemination, the use of Wikimedia platforms in universities, and outreach efforts.
In the morning, the program featured the following presentations:
- "Exploring New Horizons: The Vital Role of Scientific Dissemination Projects and FAPESP Funding Opportunities," presented by Prof. Dr. Ricardo Della Coletta from FOP-UNICAMP.
- "The Urgency of Digital University Extension: Discussion and Directions," presented by Dr. Alexander Hilsenbeck from Wiki Movimento Brasil and Faculdade Cásper Líbero.
- "Automatic Reference Verification in Knowledge Graphs," presented by Prof. Dr. Odinaldo Rodrigues from King’s College London.
- "Challenges and Responsibilities: Ethics in the Age of Artificial Intelligence," presented by Dr. Mateus Roder.
In the afternoon, participants engaged in additional activities and discussions, including:
- "Technology as a Frontier Object for Research," presented by Prof. Dr. Angela Maria Grossi from UNESP Bauru.
- "Wikimedia and Science," presented by Dr. Thais Morata from NIOSH/CDC.
- The launch of the digital course "Introduction to Basic Audiology," led by Prof. Dr. Lilian Jacob from FOB-USP and Dr. Thais Morata from NIOSH/CDC.
- "Creative Connections: Interaction with Wikimedians and Poster Session," a session for exchanging ideas and presenting previously submitted and approved research.
This event provided a valuable platform for collaboration and knowledge sharing among attendees.
I Seminar Projects Wikimedia and Open Sciences
On November 7, Wiki Movimento Brasil hosted the 1st Seminar on Wikimedia Projects and Open Sciences: Potential for Scientific Extension and Dissemination. This event was a collaboration between Wiki Movimento Brasil, the Digital Observatory of Latin American Women, the Institute of Arts at UERJ, and the Art+Feminism project. The seminar aimed to create a space for sharing experiences and strengthening connections among educators who currently use or are interested in using Wikimedia platforms in their classrooms or extension projects.
Held at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), the event sought to foster the formation of a collaborative network of Wikimedians providing mutual support. It encouraged reflection on past activities and established strategies for developing new initiatives that would positively impact student education.
In addition to the theoretical discussions, the event featured an editing marathon called the Editatona das Artes. This complementary activity aimed to motivate undergraduate students from various universities across the state of Rio de Janeiro to improve or create entries about various artistic expressions and their prominent figures on the Portuguese Wikipedia, with a particular focus on the biographies of Latin American women intellectuals.
WMB participated in the 7th Meeting of the Science for Education Network, presenting the research titled "Wikiversity: A Platform for Research Groups and Open Science."
On November 30, Wiki Movimento Brasil participated in the 7th Annual Meeting of the National Science for Education Network (CpE), where we received an honorable mention for our research titled "Wikiversity: A Platform for Research Groups and Open Science."
The event celebrated the tenth anniversary of the CpE Network, which aims to unite researchers from various fields to share scientific studies that promote improved educational practices and policies. This year, the meeting was part of the 3rd Satellite Symposium of the UNESCO Chair in Science for Education.
Our study presented at the event explores the challenges and opportunities of Wikiversity for Brazilian scientific production and dissemination. If you would like to learn more about our research, the full article is published on Wikiversity.
