Lviv hosted Ukraine’s first student photo walk for Wikipedia

Summary: On October 17, 2024 with the support of the Wikimedia Ukraine, the first wikiwalk around the sights of “Ancient City of Lviv” was held for students of the Lviv Polytechnic National University. The event was organized by associate professor Mariana Senkiv with the goal of attracting students to participate in the international photo contest “Wiki Loves Monuments” and learning about their native land. The two-hour excursion part of the walk was conducted by Roksolana Debrianska, a well-known Lviv guide.

19 first-year students took part in the wikiwalk. Before the wikiwalk, they learned about the rules of the photo contest, the features of photographing interiors and uploading photos to Wikimedia Commons. Students actively photographed the interiors of the monuments included in the excursion route, in particular the Latin Cathedral, the Jesuit Church, the Armenian Cathedral, the Dominican Church, the Kornyakt Palace, and wrote down basic information about them.

Students were amazed by the beauty and interesting history of the monuments and admitted that they had underestimated these interiors before.

After the wikiwalk, the organizers held an online meeting of students with an organizing team member Natalia Tymkiv (user:Antanana on Wikipedia). She demonstrated the algorithm for uploading a photo using a specific example, and students also had the opportunity to get answers to questions and demonstrate uploading their own photos.

By October 31, 2024 (photo contest deadline), students had uploaded a total of 399 photos to Wikimedia Commons.
